Washington to the Keys - Anything to visit?
This will be my first trip to the USA, and I'm interested if you could recommend me museums, junkyards or any place to visit related to our trucks or vintage american iron in general.
We will drive from Washington down to Florida Keys. We have two weeks, so we have enough time to take detours.

In northern Pennsylvania is a car museum with lots of 50's, 60's and 70's cars in pristine condition. It is open only on Saturdays. It is however about 4 hours north of DC.
Their website is: Eagles Mere Auto Museum
Check out their gallery, a lot of pics of their cars.
It is in Eagles Mere, PA, a beautiful resort town in the mountains.

As you are passing through North Carolina you should stop at Dennis Carpenters place. You can drool over all the cool stuff he sells. Not sure if it's your thing but the NASCAR Hall of Fame is in Charlotte. Fat Man is also real close to there. They always have cool projects going on. You can tour a lot of the race shops too. Hendricks is close to the speedway and is cool. You could easily spend a day in and around Charlotte on car related stuff.

[QUOTE]a museum called "wheels thru time" in western NC in the Maggie Valley west of Ashville is full of motorcycles from early rare to modern bikes. Interesting to see but check hours as not always open.
In key west you have to go to the Hogs Breath Saloon. Hogs breath is better than no breath at all. Duvall st is a site to see. Have fun

Mel Fisher's Treasure Museum (melfisher.com/sebastian) on A1A, just south of Sebastian Inlet, is cool. Grab a gold bar from the sunken 1715 Spanish treasure fleet- The Atocha and her sister ships. Afterward stop at Waldo's (waldosvero.com), also on A1A just a bit south in Vero Beach, for a nice, oceanside meal on the deck. My favs are the grouper or mahi sandwiches and the fish dip appetizer. A crowded beach in that area will consist of 15 - 20 people per mile, during the week you'd be hard pressed to find more than 2-3 people per mile.
If you're in Ft. Lauderdale around dinnertime, Cap's Place (capsplace.com) is an actual 1920's speakeasy and bootlegger's hideout. You'll take a short drive through a neighborhood to reach their dock where a launch (think African Queen) will take you on a short trip to the island the restaurant is on. Good food and a great diversion. Once you're in the Keys rumrunners are the drink of choice.

51 Fred we just got back from Seattle we had good weather except for half a day. We went to the car museum that you talk about. I would go back to the area anytime we spent a lot of time just touring the area. You live in a nice place but like always it is nice to get back home for awhile.
