Fuel door repair

2011 f-150.

Today as i was finishing gassing up, my fuel door suffered it's fate and wouldn't close tight like the spring was broken.

Well, don't despair if this happens to you. The spring is quite literally the strongest piece of the entire assembly. Don't buy a new part until you've removed the old assembly and assessed the damage. As I understand from old posts, the part can be $50 and up depending on where you get it.

The repair without pics, sorry, pics are not needed.

Remove the three screws surrounding the filler neck. At this point the only thing holding the assembly in is the weather seal around the body panel.

Gently work a fine tool around the weather seal and work this tool in between the assy and the body panel starting from the upper right. If you look under the truck, you'll understand why.

Gently tug on the assy and pull as it loosens from the top right. I will bind right there but tug a little harder and it will pop right out.

You'll note the spring is attached to two pins. One pin is a key way that holds the door and hinge in place and the other is for resistance. There's a technical term but I'm no engineer. LOL

Remove the spring, pull out the key and you'll likely see your issue. The key likely worked it's way loose and allowed the door to slip beyond the keys.

Re-insert the key, replace the spring and viola! You're fixed! For an added measure I took the advise of a fellow FTE brother and I drilled a tiny hole through the bottom of the key. I then inserted the tiny cotter pin or you could use a paperclip through the hole. This will prevent the pin from coming out again. Re-install the cup assy, screw the three screws back in and your done.

It cost me nothing and took all of 15 minutes total.

Appreciate you sharing that Tim
I had the fuel door on my 2011 do the same thing, but it was under the factory bumper to bumper warranty then. So guessed who got to fix it.

Thanks for the tip Tim. I'd rep ya, but I'm in rep jail again. And sorry that you even had to deal with this in the first place. I for one will keep this in my tip bank of things to watch for and remember if and when this happens on my truck.

Thanks for the post Tim. It's disappointing that Ford let this known issue carry on to the 09-14 models. I had this problem several years ago on my 2004 F150, and it cost me $135 at the dealer to get it fixed.
