C6 to E4OD swap behind a 400

Anyone here actually done it? Hating life in the '77 with the C6, 29" tall tires and 4.10 rear on the highway.

I've contemplated a gear vendors OD unit, swapping to a Tremec 5-speed manual and an E4OD. I really like the truck looking original inside so I'm leaning toward the E4OD. I believe I can even make the stock shifter work with it.

I know when swapping a 5-speed in behind a 400 some flywheel/pilot bushing issues need to be adapted, would the E4 torque converter bolt right up?

I had a well set up E4 in my lightning with a 2400 stall and custom valve body it was perfect.

Trans hump; I believe my factory 2wd c6 truck would have the low trans hump and have to be cut out to clear the larger E4? Is the E4 wider and gonna cause grief with my headers/exhaust?

Speedo/VSS; I have a perfectly functioning 9 inch rear. How has the speed sensor been done? I believe possibly the earlier E4s had a speedo drive gear with a sensor piggybacked on there? I would still need a cable to run the stock speedo.

That's all I can think of for now, running FiTech EFI so I have TPS and even MAP sensor to tap in to.

Forgot to add that US Shift (baumann) makes a controller and harness for around $600. My main concerns are physical fitment (nice truck, don't want to bash the trans tunnel or cut/chop) and the interface with the crank and flex plate of the 400. I have a nice mini starter I'd like to keep.

E40D Transmission Swap - Hot Rod Network

That is an article with a bunch of pictures but not a lot of info for the install. Does show some problem areas.

I'm pretty sure there was a 9" in something, that had a vss on the pinion...
I think I have one somewhere that I was going to investigate what the plug actually was for.
Send me a reminder in a couple weeks, I'm out of town for a while and can't check now.

You didn't mention what you're using the truck for, or if you need the low gearing. Why not just swap out the 4.10s for 3.73s or 3.5xs?

It's a play toy. Even swapping to 3.55s would net a marginal rpm reduction vs. OD with a lockup converter. I've done the calculations

Do it! I think it would be a great addition to your efi truck.

How's it running now with the fuel system fixed?

Running great. Been pretty cool here lately and I've enjoyed not needing a choke! He fires right up and idles smooth, no more loading up, being cold blooded and stumbling. The computer doesn't compensate for transistions by self tuning as quickly as I'd like but I was able to get it figured out with the accel pump functions(lean spot). Being able to datalog and see where the problems are is priceless. Been driving the '77 way more than the '05 lately!

That's good to hear! When I did my EFI with mustang stuff the FiTech wasn't out yet or I would have gone that route. Mine works great too, but there is a lot more wiring and parts I had to buy and I had to get it dyno tuned to run right.

I would have also consider a 400 I had one in HS and let me tell you as teenager I tested that engine on a daily bases and it survived.

This guy worked for ford 40 yrs. Senior master mechanic . I came across him because I was wanting a video on how to rebuild my own c6 using AE40d in it.
The reason I was wanting to do it was it increased the fuel mileage and was stronger for mudding.
But he told me to skip the AE40D and use 4R100 gears , it lowers 1 and 2 gear.

The E4OD and 4R100 have exactly the same ratios in all four gears. There is no such thing as an AE4OD.

I would do whatever Ford did for a VSS on the donor vehicle. If it's everything I've had from the '80s and '90s, the VSS drops right into the speedometer cable hole, and the speedo cable clips into the VSS. That's one pair of parts you can rob from a later donor truck. Although the cable ends might still be the same and your existing one will work - I can't remember if they're different.
If the speedometer drive gear in your AODE is different from what's in the C6, then you will need a different driven gear on your VSS.

Well I guess I'll be finding out. Picked up an early 90s E4od for a 460. It is a ford reman and has a newer F8 front pump. Super clean inside. Hopefully it will just be a soft parts rebuild. From my research the trans hump will have to be cut out and replaced with a 4x4 one to clear. I measured pan width and it appears it will still fit between my headers.
