Parts already obsolete for 2009 F150?

This article by a Canadian consumer news agency took on the task of finding out why a F150 owner was unable to buy a HVAC part to fix his 2009 truck. Ford of Canada said if he couldn't find the part at the places they suggested, they had done all they could and he was on his own. In the end they contracted a company to make the part, but not before the CBC consumer news crew Go Public had gotten involved, it seems they were perfectly willing to force him to jerry rig something or force an upgrade on him to a newer model. So, is lack of parts availability reasonable on a 7 year old vehicle, especially considering it's North Americas most popular truck? Kinda sad they had to be pushed into supplying something required. Manufacturers are only required to supply parts for 7 years (in the US, at least).

Truthfully, I'd like to know what part it is that's needed. I'm still finding parts for my 79' F150.

I'd say 95% of the non warranty modules I've put in were remanufactured by a specialty electronics company. If it was a common part number we were sent one and exchanged the faulty one. For a more exotic part they would repair the actual part we sent them. I don't see why the same thing couldn't have been done in this instance.

From the wording of the article I'm assuming it's the HVAC control head. It's likely that it's some odd selection of options that not many buyers chose. Like a platinum package minus the climate controlled seats.

That's the time frame that I understand it to be too. I know that https://www.fordpartsprime.com/ carries a lot of hard to find, vintage and 'discontinued' OEM Ford parts. I'm curious to know what the part number is that the guy couldn't find.

  1. The article is 3 years old.
  2. Gen'12 (2009-2014), without particulars, are interchangeable.
  3. What? Used/salvaged parts weren't available.
  4. Without particulars, IMO bunk.
