Gears or cams for an under powered 4.6

I've posted here before that I am very unhappy with the power of my truck. I've had it in the shop and they tell me everything is fine. I realize this is a 5500 lb vehicle with oversize mud tires and a small 280 ci V8. So with that said what would benefit me the most. A gear swap or a set of cams. They are about the same cost when all is said an done. The guys a MHS tell me I will have a noticeable gain in low and mid-range torque and power with their toruqer cams. What I'm really looking for is the truck just to drive better.

Only thing I have done to the truck is put on some 285's in place of the 265's. But it seams like a real dog to me. If I keep it out of OD and let it rev around 2400 rpm it does much better. But if I keep in in OD it's constantly down shifting to pull even the slightest grade. This is running around 60 mph.

I need new tires but would that really make a noticable difference? We're talking about 20 lbs of weight per tire and 1" overall outside diameter. I could have the came and a tune done for about the same price as gears. I would do the cams myself but not the gears.

Gears will make more of a difference than cams.
What gears do you have currently?
You need to upgrade headers and get a tune to really notice a difference from the cams. Plus the 4.6 just is not going to make much more power unless you boost it.

Looks like 3.55 which explains why it's such a dog. 4.10,,,,4.30??? Either one should be a huge improvement. If I stick with a 285 I will have about a 33" tire

4.10 minimum. Don't know if they make a 4.30 for these trucks.
4.56 may be too tall for 33's on the highway.

When I put the 315s on mine, I basically lost 5th gear. I bought a superchip programmer, & it helped quite a bit, even though they claimed only a 9hp increase. A few months ago I notice an update on their website bumping it to 21hp, so I tried it. I can now cruse over the mountains in OD at 75.

Do you feel you need more gear with those big heavy tires? What octane fuel are you running? I was leaning towards SCT cause of the custom tunes you can buy.
