2000 Ford Excursion w/ 7.3L: What's it worth?
I am a current owner of a nicely built 2006 Ford F350 but I am looking to make a switch for the sake of my growing family. I have been looking for an Excursion with the following options:
-Diesel engine
-4x4
-Low mileage
Well I think I found my vehicle. It is a 2000 Excursion as follows:
-Only 43,000 miles
-4x4
-Limited model
-Stock besides CAI and exhaust
-7.3L diesel
I had been tracking low mileage 6.0L and the sweet spot for pricing with my criteria was in the $20,000 to $25,000 range which matches the blue book values. But when I start to look at a 2000 Excursion with the 7.3L for book value, prices are in the $10,000 to $14,000 range. But the asking prices seem to trend well over the blue book value.
So with the 2000 Excursion I am eyeing for purchase, what do you think is a fair selling price?

Personally i kinda get a kick out of the people that pay $30+ k for these very low mileage 7.3 excursion.
Personally I'd look for one around 100k in the $15k range that has had all its maintance done.
Look at it this way, The 7.3 is consertivitly a 300k motor with many going 500k +
But what people often over look is the drivetrain maintance cost.
At about 75k miles your going to need brakes, ball joints, tie rods
170k to 250k seems to be the range for a trans.
If you plot out the mileage based operating cost to accumulated mileage vehicle value it's pretty clear the ultra low mileage ones are an emotional buy opposed to a value buy.
But at the end of the day, buy what makes you happy. It's cool there are still ultra low mileage Excursions around.

My 7.3 was bought with around 240,000 miles on it. But the trans has 9,000 miles on a rebuild, and the balljoints n such have been done too. So I didn't think the milage was a big deal as I've seen 500k plus on them with nothing but general maintenance and repairs.

Unfortunately these seem to be the ultimate example of supply and demand. My dad has been casually looking for one for a couple of years, but it's just hard to swallow paying $20K+ for a 15+ year old vehicle without many of the features of the newer trucks.
7.3s are absolute work horses, but they are not without their share of maintenance needs. Oil leaks everywhere, injectors, IPRs, ICPs, etc. are not out of the realm. But the internals are easily good for 500K.
6.0s aren't the worst thing in the world, as long as they have been bullet proofed and had the EGR deleted, which is significant extra expense.
Also, don't forget that if anything were to ever happen to it, your insurance company is probably going to go by Blue Book, which might be thousands less than you have into it.
Good luck in your hunt.
