'74 F250 Crew cab 429 build
Hey guys whats up!
So I'm new to the forum and my posts might not be the best at first but I'll do my best. I just wanted to start a thread to share my baby and get input and ideas from others.
So here's kind of an idea of whats up with my truck. So it's a 74 F250 Crew cab witha a flatbed, it popped up on my local classifieds not to long ago and I had to have it. I traded my perfectly good WORKING 4runner for it, emphasis on working. It had been sitting in a field for years after some guys had put the body on a 78 F250 frame and drivetrain and never finished it fully. From a bit of detective work I'm fairly certain it was some Californians work truck and then it went to Nevada and now Utah. The body is in great shape, pretty straight and only minor surface rust. When I got the truck a few weeks back it had the basic components, engine, tranny..well that's about it. All the other parts were piled up. The engine started and ran well, it had just been "gone through" and had a decent intake and headers. But being that boat anchor 400 it wasnt good enough. So I got a 429..the 429 has forged internals, 460 heads, cam, headers, intake etc. should be pushing about 400 at the crank. Its the thunderjet 4v. I got it from a friend who had orginally put it in his 83 f350 but stopped driving cuz he got a new one. So a trade for a nice winch and a few other goodies got me the whole truck for parts. Basically that's where I'm at. Just pulled the 400 out today and getting ready to pull the 429.

I hope that wasn't too wordy
But the basic idea is a sort of a restomod idea. I want the 429 and while the c6 can be a good tranny I want to do a Zf5, i know a need a neautral balance flywheel but not a whole ton so if any of you know about that install to a 429 let me know! Other things im doing, two tone paint, I'm swapping on a better flatbed, doing an AC install, want to do fuel injection with one of those fancy shmancy kits, newer interior, etc etc. Any input would be great!

Welcome to FTE 429_crewcab, all you CC getting guys are killing me. Now I am mad at myself for passing up a few off the C list...oh well.
With a single cab I only have room for 2 (wife and dog), so its all good. lol
Nice rig and make sure to check out the CC forum. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...ly-thread.html

Today is full of exciting events, after a very sketchy trans removal from the truck it is totally gutted.
Something exciting is on my local classifieds i found a zf5 mated to an np205 that I'm picking up for 300 bucks. 5 speed goodness
I also gutted the other truck of all the accessories, a.c., power steering, alternator, headers, all that's left is Bell housing and engine mounts then the 429 is free!
I'll post some pics when I get the zf5

Looks good, I'm on a similar path.
Mine is a '75 Crew Cab on a '79 F250 Cab Frame.
1975 F250 Crew Cab CCSB Daily Driver Build
Something in the lower end decided to give out a couple weeks ago. Bearings are a knocking in the 400, I'm going to pull it and find out exactly how bad. But if it gets too ugly, I'm going to have to consider a 429/460.
I look forward to seeing the issues that you run into and how to overcome them.

Just picked up the ZF5! It was originally off a 460 the so the bell housing pattern is the same. Originally I was going to wait to to do the zf5 swap until later, but saw this for sale and figure I may as well do the swap while the engines out and I have access to it all. If anyone's done a zf5 to a 429 amd could help me out that'd be sweet! Keep you guys updated

Summit says in 79 ford used a flex plate with 164 teeth.

So i know I need an internal balance flywheel because the 429 is internal, this is the one I'm looking at
JEGS Performance Products 601370 : Flywheel Ford FE: 1967-70 352 & 360, 1967-76 390 & 427 | JEGS
And with this I know it's a different tooth, but is it possible to reuse the c6 starter on the zf5? It's brand new
