390 rebuild? seems tired only limited cash.

i have a 390 that seems to be tired. it can't even pull itself over a hill not to mention a trailor. what are the steps to finding the prob? ie. checking cam, checking crank, ect. also if you are able to spend $1000 on it what would you do. i have a eldabrock carb 600cfm and mainifold on it, petronix, and msd ignition box the 6al(?) on it. other than that stock. it is out of a 73 crewcab 2wd. i think could have been swapped with a 76 4wd motor. it weak help.

Have a shop do a compression test and a leakdown test. This will tell you if the rings and/or valves are shot. If its just the valves replace the heads. My local Kragens had 390 heads for 137.00 each+core. If it's the rings then get a Master rebuild kit from www.larrysperformance.com for 395.00 It comes with pistons, rings,, bearings, freeze plugs, gaskets and crank. Some other stuff too. Pretty much everthing you need.
