The transmission pressure test port. It's the easiest spot to put one, and gives an idea of the temperature leaving the pump.

The test port in the side of the transmission.
That will tell you the temp of the transmission.
The oil leaving the transmission will get heated up by the TC and you will not know the temp of the transmission.
The oil in the pan has already been cooled and came from the return line from the oil cooler.

Ive heard the pressure port hardly has any fluid in that cavity and would in turn just be measuring the case temp. Is this true?

It doesn't really matter. There is no "correct" transmission temperature - as it will be different everywhere you measure.

More or less that's true. Unless you're going to find a way to put a sensor in the middle of the trans you're not going to get a better reading than the test port.

Ok i have a update. I installed a autometer trans temp guage and put the sender in the test port. Went for a 20 minute drive, empty, (including hilly roads) and saw 210 on the guage. Does this seem a little hot cuz i also have a aux trans cooler too. Also the fluid that passes by the test port; does that fluid come out of the TC the go right past that port leading to see a higher temp?

Test port is connected to the pump outlet. 210 seems hot for just a quick drive. Do you have both coolers hooked up?

Yes sir. Both coolers are hooked up with no signs of blockage. It took about 15 minutes to reach that temp with about 8 of those minutes going uphill. The rest was flat. Total trip was about 20 minutes.

It was the autometer z series trans temp guage, autometer dual pillar guage pod for 1987-91 ford and a low profile sender unit also from autometer

Thanks! That's the gauge I was looking at. Where did u get the power from? I was thinking an open spot on the fuse panel on the drivers side. I would put the gauge on the dash. Did u use the green bulb cover? I was just thinking of doing this and your thread was perfect timing. Thanks again

I like to see more around 160-190 while just crusing. How big is the aux cooler? Do you have large tires?

Sure man. I didnt put a bulb cover on. They dont fit well when u push it in the bulb socket. I used the constant power on the headlight switch. I might use the ignition switch so that way the guage turns off when u turn the key. Right now its constantly powered. For light power, i used the blue wire on the back of the headlight switch so the light comes on when the headlights do.
