Replacing Drums 78 F250 HD Help
#16
Probably the easiest way.....or you could use a rubber mallet and smack the hub on either side freeing it up from the drum. Notice in the above hub pictures you'll see a little ridge around the inner hub inside of the bolt hole flange. That fits snugly into the drum. Beat the studs into the drum, turn it over and insert the hub - a very snug fit.

Screwdriver points to ridge on inner hub which inserts into the drum from the outside
Slot A (inner hub) inserted into slot B inside drum, (shoe side)
Left - Drum, outer side.
Right - hub, outer side.
Ready to insert slot C (hub) into slot D (outside of drum)
Completed drum/hub assembly minus the studs.

Thanks for the write-up and pics! I've done the brakes on all three trucks (two are Dana 70's) and didn't realize the hub and drum were separate components, apparently held together by the wheel studs. When I looked at pictures on the Autozone site, they didn't seem to match, so I figured they were "representative". Learning new stuff here all the time...

I'm new to this Dana 60 stuff, (1979 F250 4x4). I'm also working on the rear brakes. I haven't seen this type of seal before, (the one on the left, the parts store sold me the one on the right), anyone have any information or suggestions on where to find this seal or a suitable replacement? Thanks in advance, and forgive this old man's internet ineptness.

If your vehicle has a full floating front differential, just slide the drum(s) off with out removing the front hubs. The '73-'75 F-250 D44 closed knuckle front differential has drums that are separate from the front hub....not unlike the rear D60 full floater.
Remove the tire after vehicle is in PARK or granny gear, parking brake on and rear wheels chocked. Remove the drum with the hub....again, similar to the D60 rear - nut/washer/nut - I can't remember if the nuts on the D44 take the same size/type socket as the D60 rears.
Replace brake shoes (wheel cylinders?) as you would normally...take before/after pictures for reference......check your manual for proper torque specs on the nut and backing it off (quarter turn?) when replacing the inner nut.
