Boost Leak, Need Help!

I have been informed by my friends that my wastegate is not opening when I let out of the throttle, it's just whistling back down, I took my friend for a ride, and he said the truck wasn't building near as much boost as it should. I've bought the materials required to build a boost leak detector. Do y'all have any ideas what my problem could be? Wastegate issues? Turbo? I just want my truck to run like it should.

Thanks,
Caleb

These trucks don't have waste gates. In stock form these trucks are kind of laggy by nature as far as spooling up. If you don't have a boost gauge, there is no way to tell how much boost it is building.

So it's just running normally then? I just know my truck sounds nothing like my friends 99 7.3, his flutters between gears, mine does not. How much should these trucks build boost wise?

All stock you will see about 15-17 psi.

if you don't mind me asking, what does your truck sound like when you let out of the throttle?

What kind of intake does your buddy have?

Is his truck tuned?

Well, it's kind of hard to explain. It depends on how much it is boosted really. My truck isn't stock though, so it's not close to what yours will sound like.

In stock form, you're not going to get much turbo surge. And depending on the intake, it will sound different. The 96 OBS trucks sound a little different than the SuperDutys as well. Without boost readings, it's tough to know what's happening just by listening to it, or describing it over the internet.

His has an AFE intake, a hyper tech tuner, over injectors, and a 3 1/2 inch straight pipe.

Yeah, your truck won't sound anything like his. LOL! There probably isn't anything wrong with your truck. Probably running just like a stock OBS should run.

With this truck having a little over 200,000 miles, would it hurt it to run like a TS 6 Pos Chip? I've heard good things about them, there is a guy around here that has one in his 1997. He speaks highly of it.

Won't hurt a thing, but don't expect to see much more than a 50 HP gain with it, even though it will have like a 140 HP tune as it's hottest tune. You will wanna go ahead and get that Pyrometer if you chip it, and if you ever go with any other mods like bigger injectors and turbo, you will wanna get custom tunes on the chip. With a stock truck, the canned tunes that come on the chip will do fine. It will wake it up a little.
