Who's gone from V10 to 6.2?

Your opinions?
My 6.0 powerstroke (bulletproofed and problem free) was recently totalled when someone T-Boned our trailer on the hwy.

A couple buddies of mine have gotten V-10s and are impressed with how they tow. I am leaning toward a gasser, around 2005-20012.

Curious for those who have towed with both what you think. I see that the v10 has more torque but the 6.2 has a 6sp. I have searched other threads but they are mostly from 2011 when the 6.2 was new. I figure there are alot more people who have made the switch by now who can chime in.

Im currently looking at two trucks, an 08 and a 12. The 12 is about 6k more.

Trailer is about 8500lbs.

The v8 can handle that no problem. My camper weighs in at 8,000lbs and i get about 9mpg on my 6.2. and empty the truck can get about 13mpg. the v10 will be horrible on gas either towing or empty. very rarely does the v8 lock into 6th with that much weight behind it at 60mph.

I used to own both at the same time. I preferred the V10 for towing. The 6 speed auto is nice to drive empty but it does a LOT of shifting while towing. In 3rd gear lots. It does the job just fine though. The V10 didn't shift nearly as much and only hit 3rd when you were really pushing it. The 6.2 has 4.30 gears and the 2006 V10 as 4.10 cogs. 14mpg for the 10 cyl and 15 for the 8cyl.

That seems to be the general consensus. 10 is a little better Towing but 8 gets about 1mpg better?

My dad is seeing mpg on his 15' 6.2l basically the same as his old 03' V10.(configured the same) The 6.2l does pretty good towing, mainly because of the 6speed. The stock tune leaves a LOT to be desired on the 6.2l and just like the V10 the 6.2l prefers 4.30 gears.

I liked my 08 v10 much better for towing than my '13 6.2. I also liked the 5 speed better than the 6 speed trans, to me the 5 speed was programmed better always being in the right gear whereas the 6 speed couldn't make up its mind what to do. The v10 with the 5 speed stayed in 5th longer because it has a better torque curve, the 6.2 with the 6 speed I would lock out 5th and 6th when towing, in fact I would lock out 6th when not towing until I got over 55mph. I had the 08 v10 for 5 years 100k miles and I had the 6.2 for 10 months.

I used to have a v10...i prefer my new 2016 6.2 it pulls great and is a good truck.
I could be towing anything from my light weight boat at 4600 pounds to a fuel trailer i tow frequently weighing 13800 and it has always impressed me.

Just sold my V10 and upgraded to a new 6.2 with 4.30 gears. I did a lot of reading and research on the 6.2 and decided on this over the 6.7 based on my use.

The V10 worked great for me and it will be missed. I know hope that the new 6.2 will work out but as of now the truck has about 25 miles on it, so no feedback yet on the new one.

I have a 2011 6.2 with 4.30 gears. Pulling my trailtech tilt deck trailer with jeep on it I was sitting at 16,500lbs and averaged a bit over 10 mpg. Since having 4.30s installed even towing that trailer it runs in 6th gear on every hill aside from the really steep grades which at most might run me down to 4th for the steepest parts but overall it pulls very nicely and does not feel underpowered to me. If you step on it hard it will accelerate up any hill I've found.

My 2 cents? If you are going with a 6.2, then look for one with the 4.30 gears. I went from a 2004 F350 with the V10 turning 4.30's to a 2014 F250 with a 6.2 and 3.73 gears. Towing around 9500 lbs it took me about 8 months to regret that choice. I since have turned it over for a 2015 with the 6.7 PSD. However, if my 6.2 HAD the 4.30's (they are a little hard to find unless ordering new) I probably would have kept it. As a side note,, my 6.2 got better mileage empty than my V10, but a lot worse when towing. Did it tow my trailer ok? Sure, but grades were handled in lower gears somewhere north of 4000 RPM. In my 2004, the V10 had issues with spark plugs. I had 2 break off in the head when changing at 90,000 miles but other than that, no issues whatsoever. I believe that was addressed in the 2005 and later models which also got some power increases. If you couldn't already tell, yes I do miss my V10!!

I'm not saying you didn't have plug issues on your 04 but the late 03 and 04's had the 8 theards per plug hole unlike the previous years that only had 4 it wasn't common for them to have problems with the plugs breaking off in the head or the plugs being ejected like the earlier models. The plugs breaking started In 05 with the 3valve motor which did also bring a power increase but until midway through 08 they used a 2 piece plug that would break when they were being changed.

Although I got the dreaded 3.73 in my 6.2 I have no problems how it pulls. I have pulled my Jeep from Chicago to Maob and back and it did awesome. I wish ford still had the V10 available though. I would have sought that out.

I love my 6.2, it averaged 9.5mpg towing 8500 lbs 1600 miles across the smoky mountains. Yes the higher torque curve and 6speed results in a little more shifting, but it's seamless. There is a video on YouTube of a v10 vs a 6.2 with the same gears pulling the same trailer up a hill. It's a wide open pull and the 6.2 outruns it pretty good. But that doesn't mean that some would not prefer a v10 for towing, because at low rpms, the v10 gets the win. We have several v10 trucks at work, and I've pulled a 22k lbs mold on a tri axle flatbed around the plant with them. Don't have much experience towing on the highway with them, but empty, I'm not very impressed with them.

Had the V10 (3.73) with the manual transmission. I would have ordered the V10 in my 2016 if it was offered. Towed the 32 Jayco about 1500 miles with the 6.2 (4.3). My only "complaint" is the high rpms (to me) shifting out of 4. Tows fine but still like the V10 better. Both engines rev fine, but old school habits are hard to break.
