Do these starters in these trucks last as long as a gas engine starter or does the fact turning the engine requires more grunt burn them out faster ?

The reason I ask is because it seems like I have to replace these more often than a gasser.

Yes. They use a lot of cranking amps and get hot as hell. You can make them last by keeping your crank times down and let the starter cool for a minute

The Ford recommendation is 20 seconds of cranking 2 minute cool down.

The biggest difference in starters is Direct drive versus Gear drive.

You want a gear drive, not a direct drive.

Thanks, so the trick is to make sure your fuel system and glow plugs are right and the starter will last......

The real problem is that there are a lot of really crummy rebuilds out there; it's a crapshoot what you'll get at the autoparts store. One might last a month(due to poor machining of the brush contacts eating the brushes up), while the next might last years.

Also, our trucks have a standard SAE #2(IIRC) starter pattern, so you'll find starters from other engines which fit. As long as it's a gear-reduction unit of the right physical size, it'll probably work.

On top of all that, Realslow has the right idea here: My tan 88 will fire off in about 5 seconds, with proper glow plug use. My blue 88 takes about 20 seconds of cranking(and two cyclings of glow plugs), due to a worn out IP and possible fuel bleed down(and probably other issues). Which do you think will have a longer lasting starter?

I do not like glow plugs but I live in the south but people up north say you have to have them.

I have read where people will install ether injection on these but when I use ether the engine tries to fire backwards.

Does anybody have a solution to this?

Means you're adding too much. Found that out myself. Just a whiff!
I personally hate ether. I think it's garbage on these high compression diesels. Modern ones works great for but these ones are way too touchy about it.
I recently found that gasoline in a spray bottle works REALLY REALLY well and won't pre-detonate. Was trying to bleed my IP after a swap and it will actually run the engine around idle speed or a bit faster if you pump fast enough, haha. Bled the injectors in just 10 seconds!!!

And to stay on topic...it's also really really easy on the starter.

I went through four Mitsubishi starters in less than a year, got a denso and its made it a year so far. Even whips over like a powerstroke. Something none of my Mitsubishi starters would do. Maybe I just got duds. None of them actually died. They just began to drag. I'm hell on starters though. With a lifetime warranty I don't cut them any slack.

So I don't know of anyone who has had one style of starter in new, then another style new to compare.

The best answer so far.
