Removing fan clutch 1984 I-6

Are there any tricks to removing the fan that will work without buying a $50 pulley holding tool.

I've tried everything from binding the crank pulley, to hitting the wrench with a hammer thing to break the fan clutch nut loose. Nothing has worked so far.

1984 F150 with the straight 6. Has a fan clutch, despite the Chiltons manual saying it shouldn't have one.

If it's v-belt it's left handed thread.

Some get lucky just holding the belt tight and smacking the wrench.

A little heat on the hex may help as well, some use loctite when assembling them heat releases loctite.

EDIT
325F degrees is the release temperature for Red 271.

Do you have any metal bar laying around that you could drill a hole in and put it under one of the pulley bolts?

Never worked on a six, but my diesel has one of those aggravating spin on clutch fans. I had to make a holder for it and that's what I did.

I've seen conflicting information on whether it's left or right hand thread. I'll try turning it the other way.

I do have a bar that could work... I'd have to pound one end flat, might enlist my brother-in-law's forge to help with that.

I appreciate the info!

They come off the same way they rotate ...

V-Belt rotates clockwise, thus left handed threads.
Serpentine rotates counter clockwise, thus right handed threads.

My original fan shroud on my diesel says "caution fan" and it also says "left hand thread" on it.
