Is this an idle vibration or an all rpm vibration?

It idles smooth but the more you rev the more it shakes...to a point anyway. I wish I could just go out and check the engine again but I have to put the transmission back in. First I have to get some new seals and gaskets for it then put it back in. It looks to be a while now before I get to that point. This is one of the strangest looking, insides, transmission I have yet to see. I am not sure that I need to go into it but would hate to if the syncros were bad. I tried to put it on my workbench but that son of a bitch is HEAVY!!! Might have to us the engine hoist.

Anyway, I will at least pull the plugs and take a look. I know I can put the flywheel, clutch and bell housing on so I could turn it over and I may do that while checking out the tranny. I think the tranny worked ok but during this last phase I guess the guy could not get it into gear with the clutch in. So he continued to press hard on the shift linkage until it broke instead of maybe calling me to see if I could have adjusted the linkage. I put all new linkage in, z-bar, pivot ***** and such, it really was smooth.

I can see some heat marks on the flywheel where it looks to have gotten hot but the disc and pressure plate look good. I ramble again. I was so certain that I checked for a miss quite a while back by pulling plug wires and found nothing. That is why I was hoping the flywheel was wrong. It should be a relatively easy problem to fix! It is a good truck, flatbed, dually and want to get it back on the road. Not so much for me but just maybe as an heirloom for a business my wifes late brother started. So, back to it tomorrow. It is still hot here in Louisiana so not excited about working on it outside. I am retired and my shop is full!

The harmonic balancer could be bad and be causing the vibration too.

Before I put a lot of money in parts for the transmission, I would look around for a replacement; sometimes you can find a good used one for stupid cheap money.

Is your truck a two wheel drive or four?

Two wheel drive. Well I looked at the harmonic balancer and read about how some of them lose something that is riveted on or bolted on, or something. The balancer is there and it has both parts to it but I haven't checked yet to see if they have slipped. For a while I just assumed that the inner part was the weighted part and the outer was just a ring with timing marks. I guess it could also be drilled to help with the balancing and it could throw the balance off that way.

As far as the tranny itself, I am kind of looking. They are so very heavy that shipping is out of the question. I would drive a reasonable distance to get one but so far nothing has shown up on any of the sites. Ebay had one for $175 and it went quick but it was up north from me. I think if I get a seal kit and can order that shifter rod it might just do. I still haven't gone into it yet but I recall it does not have a syncro 1st gear. I think it is 1st gear on the output shaft because it has straight cut teeth and are fairly rounded off. I had to poke out one of the 3 plugs on the upper housing to get that broken shaft out so I at least need to replace that. Might be best to look for a good used upper housing instead though.

If you hear of any transmissions close to northwest Louisiana, let me know. This has the short rear extension.

Thanks

You're correct when you say 1st gear on the NP435 is not synchronized. That's what makes it FUN if you need to downshift from second, going uphill with a 2 ton load of stone in the bed!

If the teeth are rounded off, as you said, someone was grinding the snot out of it and needs replacing. I'll bet reverse gear is rounded off as well.

You are so right, they both are. A used tranny, hmmmm, you never know what you are getting but replacing a few parts plus gaskets and seals seems the way to go. I think the truck is worth it, just need to get a few other car projects finished and sold first. I have mostly looked a NOVAK stuff and seems the way to go but I will check the other link too. Again, I appreciate the insight and advice.

Thanks
