I thought I was the only person that turned everything off when I'm about to put a vehicle through a challenge. LOL! I roll down the window to thinking I'll hear something break before it does.

Steepest marked grade I have been up with my V10 was 18%. Just had ice fishing gear and two adults in it that time.

Since reading Mark Kovalskys replies above I've been digging into the throttle more.

I tow that same 7,000lb trailer a lot recently, and lately I stand on it for on ramps, passing etc.

I have some concern for the spark knock but otherwise I just "Mark it" as needed.

I did a this a few times yesterday for a 120 mile tow; fuel economy results will follow

I have found the detonation I get is caused by gas with ethanol in it. If I run straight gas all detonation goes away. Mainly the only time I see detonation since the last tune revision is at low rpm (under 1500) going up hill, in the cold temps for the most part. Some low rpm detonation is not a big deal but detonation at higher rpms can cause damage. My guess is you are running lean and getting the detonation.(the higher the ethanol content the worse) You can jump up to 89 octane fuel when towing or get a custom tune, or both.

You might run some injector cleaner thru a couple of tanks of gas, and quit prissy footing around with the throttle pedal.
Ford adaptive learning, will adjust the tires.big and fuel a cording to your driving habbits .
No e was a bit doggy when I bought it , but after driving maybe 200 miles, it has plenty of poop and vinegar .

So the pinging is just the ethanol? I usually run 91 octane and no ping but if I run 87 its ping galore

Nope, pinging is caused by a lot of things, but ethanol usually isn't one of them. Straight ethanol has significantly higher octane than regular gasoline, so ethanol typically increases octane which makes the fuel more resistant to knock.

Not disputing dkf's experience, but his account is the first I've heard likening ethanol with a pinging issue.

Fuel with an 87 octane (for example) rating is 87 octane whether it is straight gas, 10% ethanol or 15% ethanol. What extra ethanol does do is change the stoich of the fuel, which ends up being lean for your current tune and thus causes detonation. 5 Star is always doing tune revisions for stuff like this because ethanol content varies so much.

If you could run a tank of 87 pure gas I'd put money on your detonation greatly reducing or going away. Considering your location your gas probably has over 10% ethanol content in it which only makes things worse.

Interesting...., mine pings when I use 87 with 5 star tune and with stock tune

I agree about the ethanol causing pinging.

I have never heard my truck ping once in it's 69k mile life. I've been running the 5 Star 91 perf tune for years.

Stopped at a gas station on the way to the lake and the only 91 octane they had was ethanol free. I could tell the difference and I got noticeably better mileage that tank....well 11.7 or 11.8 vs 10.9 or 11.0. (with the boat)

If your engine is pinging, you have issues you need to deal with.

In all the time I've owned my V10, tuned or not, I've never actually heard it ping.

If I datalog, I can see the knock sensor working and pulling timing so fast that I might hear one once in a long while.
