Motorcraft vs Aftermarket Coils for 5.4L
Hello
I am thinking of changing all 8 COP on the 06 Navigator with the 5.4l 3v and wondered are there good quality aftermarket coils like Accel/MSD or Denso or Delphi instead of Motorcrafts much high priced ones or should I stick with Motorcraft brand?
Thanks

On my old '99 EB 5.4 i picked up a set off ebay. Generic as they come.
I put 70k miles on them and not one hiccup. Sold it this spring and it was still running like a champ at 250k miles.
So yea, i'm sure motorcrafts ARE better but you can indeed Ebay it and come out for a fraction of the price.
What are OEM motorcraft COPs? Back when i checked years ago i remember them being around $400 a set, maybe more. IIRC, and its been awhile, the ebay COPs cost ~$100. A little under i think.
If you get a bad one the sellers will send out a replacement usually.

I second the eBay coils. When I first bought my navigator I got a set of Accel coils. Just after 3months( just out of warranty) the first one went and I replaced it with one from autozone because I was close by, the second was 4 months while on vacation (advance auto). Then I picked up a set of ten from eBay for under $100. I keep one in the console with tools to swap them out. Oh and my scanner to tell which one it is. Pretty sure I haven't had the eBay coil go bad yet.

I have a set of aftermarket coils on my 06 V8 mounty. I was getting misfire codes after a coolant leak, replaced one, replaced another, and finally bit the bullet on a set of "performance" coils. Can't recall which brand, but they cost around $150. Still running strong after 3 years.
When I bought my 03 Expy a while back, it had misfire codes as well. This time I replaced the insulators and springs (bought at autozone as a kit.) $20 bucks - success!
replace the insulator boots/springs first, it's the cheaper option... good chance it will work. If not, you're only out a few bucks.

I know some of you won't believe me but Denso is the OE part. (for our vintage of Ford vans, 2007)
These are available on Rockauto for $22.79 ea.
Rockauto will tell you which part is the OE part in the item description.
I maintain a fleet of these vans - life sucks much less when you use OE parts

I've heard nothing but bad reviews for the Accell's, sad considering they're a performance part. I had one OEM go bad before 100k miles. So at 100k miles, I replaced the whole set with eBay coils when I did the plugs (I thought it'd be decent preventive maintenance). I've had 2 go bad, never got a response from seller when I tried warranty claim. I've replaced both with lifetime warranty parts from AutoZone and will continue to do so. At least if one of those go bad, it's just a quick trip to the store.

I do tend to agree. While I won't pay dealership prices, I do try to get OE from where ever I do end up buying it.
I just replaced all of my coils with OE from Rock Auto. Buy once, cry once. Good for another 100k miles.

Well, speak of the devil. Right after i post my comment above we had 3 days of heavy heavy rain. Yup, COPs like to flake out above 90% humidity and one of mine went on the fritz. Ordered full set of coils from ebay and the recommended OEM motorcraft plugs.
Just took it for a drive and all is well. Misfire gone and she's runnin smooth.
I will update if/when these go out and document how long they last. Had great luck in the past but we shall see.

have done all three options
'98 expedition eb, one at a time cop. autozone lifetime, started changing factory originals at 175,000 miles. when one would go bad, cpu would trip code in 75mile hwyl miles. Miss was obvious. cpu would pick which one in that short a drive. I went through four cop's , one at a time. Each time moving the new replacement to the back of the motor (hard one's to get to). At 330,000 miles I decided it was time to get a back up truck to haul my tools with me around. I purchased a 2004 exped. eb @ 100,000 miles. Changed plugs (to be sure) and away we went, at 150,000 I felt the miss, but the cpu would not trip a code............I waited (and waited..........and waited.....and waited,,,,,,,,,,,) no code. So I took all eight cop's off the '98 (yes still running and used, just not to haul my tools for work) and bought a set of china cop's for $100 (yeah all eight) and swapped. The '04 is at 225,000 miles on those cop's. The '98 picked two of the oem coils from the 04 to call missfire in 200 miles. So I purchased two Autozone coils for the '98. I hope she appreciates not having any china crap in her, she is retired to my weekend fishing/hunting trail truck and loves life at 350,000miles.!

Not sure where I saw this, but I think I read somewhere that the OE manufacturer for the COP's for Motorcraft are Denso, so you could just buy Denso and they should be pretty much the same ones as the OEM.
Kinda funny on a sidenote, I replaced my knock sensors with Bosch ones, as the Motorcraft was too expensive. Guess what, same ones. The original ones I pulled out had Bosch logo on them, plus Ford badge. The new ones had the same, just the spot where the Ford logo and Ford part number was supposed to be was just blank. Had the same with the MAF sensor, bought Hitachi as I read it was the OE for Ford, and what I got was an original Ford part with the Ford logo and part number scraped off..

Good info, Skauber. They're up on Rockauto for 22.79 each.
If you're not gonna hire a ASE guy moonlighting for extra money on craigslist(great idea if you have a bad back!) then even with shipping you're essentially getting OEM COPs for ~$200.
If my Ebay(KingAuto brand) COPs die early i'll be getting a set of the Denso.
Thanks
