Power Steering Conversion

Has anyone on the board installed a CMWTrucks power steering conversion kit? I have a Toyota steering box but am waiting on Mid-Fifty to develop a mounting bracket. Thought of reselling the Toyota box and going with the CMWTrucks but they warn it's not as easy as just bolting on. Looking for info on what exactly needs to be done to make it fit.

With a 302 should be easier,i have a 292 in my 48 had to move engine over 2in to pas side and go to remote oil filter. made my own bracket,as well as makeing the dragline adjustable so getting box centered when wheels are straight.then i used a toyota column with a extension. that was a big job, also used toyota pump and resevour.. along ways to the road so hope it works out. i would not do it again. cliff

Power Steering Conversion

All,

I just discovered that the kit being sold by CMWTrucks under CPP-4852PSK-AC is really CPP5356PSK-OC advertised by CPP. Is CMWTrucks misleading customers or will it work in a 48? Looks as if it's meant for a 53 through 56. Also cheaper from CCP.

I have it on my 55 and it works great have no problem and yes I did get for mid-fifty (with 10 tootsie rolls). I have a bracket for the toy power steering as mine did have toy power but at sometime before I bought it the unit was removed and a manual toy box was put on in its place I should have looked closer. I am happy with the unit that mid fifty calls the Series 400. If you have any questions let me know and I will try to help out.

artscott61,

I'm interested in purchasing the bracket from you. I guess my only concern is will it fit on a 48 frame. Do you know? What are you asking for the bracket?

I would call CPP and talk to them about their kit.
400 Series Power Steering Boxes and Kits

I don't see the 48-52 kit that works with the Toyota power steering box. When I got mine in 2012 it wasn't on the website but they had it.

It is a pretty tight fit even using Reds Headers. Here a picture with no exhaust manifold mounted.

If you are still looking for the Toyota kit I just noticed that mid fifties has added the 48-52 stock and they show the Toyota bracket in stock.( I know they have been unable to get them for awhile) You will need to call them to see if they actually have it. The tie rod I ordered clearly showed that it was back ordered, and the Toyota kit did not say that, so it may be worth a phone call. Good luck 1948-52 Ford F-100 Toyota Steering Box Mounting Bracket 4852

Good find Jim. Yes, that is the one that I used.

A while back I also pulled this off the FTE site. Can't find it now but it looks like it isn't as heavy and would be easier to fab.

I see the Toyota power steering box next to your flathead. Can those boxes be used without hydraulics? Or did you mount a PS pump on your flathead?

I mounted an Eaton pump from a '57 T-bird.

Gotcha, sorry to threadjack. Just looking to improve my steering, but not sure what direction to take. Seems like everyone talks about PS, but I'll probably stick to manual as I'm keeping my flathead and trying to remain mostly stock. Trying to decide between (1) rebuilding my original box, (2) getting a rebuilt box, and (3) converting to a Toyota manual box.

As you can see you can add P/S to a flathead V8. The only year they used that was 1953 so the brackets are hard to find. I made my own with a plasma cutter. I have 1 more extra set . . . if you are interested PM me.

If you are going with wider radial tires or a smaller steering wheel you may want power steering.

Thanks for the info. Not quite ready to pull the trigger on steering, but I'll keep that in mind. I've driven the truck off and on for 7 years without PS. So far, the only time I wished I had it was while backing up into the garage.
