Oil pan questions

Looking for a front sump oil pan for my 1986 351w block. Can I use an older pan on this engine or is there any difference in oil pans through out the years? I know some of the new oil pans have the dipstick in the pan.

Welcome to the 67-72 forum!

Have you asked this in the 351w oil pan forum?

I am not aware of any differences. Even if there are, it's compensated for by using the correct oil pickup tube.

So as long as you've got the right pickup/pan combo, you're golden.

I bought a new aftermarket pan from either Jegs, or Summit. It works. With the front sump pan, you need a timing cover with dipstick provision. If you're using a reverse rotation serpentine drive system, you can buy a timing cover from Jegs that will accomodate reverse rotation water pump, and has a fuel pump boss.

Ok so it doesn't matter if it's a 1 piece seal or a 2 piece the earlier oil pans will work? or does it matter what rear main seal you have?

The block and rear main cap determine what type rear main seal is used. The pan doesn't have anything to do with that. Make sure it is a 351W pan though. 302 pan will not work.

I had a 85 351w in my 68.I had a front sump from Summit. I didnt like the drain plug location it would drain on the cross member.I installed the 85 rear sump. No issues for clearance. Plugged up the front dip stick hole. You need the oil pick up tube to match the oil pan you use.

While the motor was out, I drilled a 1/2" hole in the crossmember at the lowest point so the oil can drain through. Still kinda messy, but not as bad as I thought it would be.

My 68 has a 351w out of a 79 LTD. The oil pan is the weirdest thing. It is lower in front and back and curves up in the middle. It has two drain plugs. No idea if the oil pick up is in the front or rear.

Oil pick is in the rear. The engines in the Panther chassis that your engine came from sit low in the chassis and centered over the 3rd member hence the double sump Oil pan.

The rear sump pan on my 7.3 had a bit more interaction with the steering than I would care for, but then that engine is huge. A 351W could most likely be set in there in such a way that it all fits.

oil pan questions

uni moe, my 1985 Mustang gt 5.0 also had two sumps. they cleared the rack and pinion setup. also they did not have the same firing order as a reg. 302. they had the firing order as a 351. if someone wants to swap in that kind of motor into their truck they might have use a crown vic. front end .?
