Lockout Interchange Between High Pinion Dana 44 to Low Pinion
Guys,
I'm going to look at a truck tonight and wasn't able to find a quick answer through the google / forum search function.
Is there only one style of lockouts for the F-250 (8 lug) '77.5-79 high pinion Dana 44?
The seller is claiming that the truck doesn't have the lockouts for it mounted, but that he has a set of the "Heavy Duty" lockouts that will go with that will work.
My understanding is that the early, low pinion Dana 44 had either the small hub or the larger heavy duty hub with lockouts to match.
Is there a heavy duty and standard duty Dana 44 in the later style as well?
I know it is not a Dana 60, but would like to know what I'm looking at before I take a look at the truck, especially since I'm mostly interested in the drivetrain in this one.
Thanks, Jim

That is correct as far as I know.
My truck is a 75 that had a low pinion closed knuckle D44 that has a swapped in high pinion open knuckle from a 77.5-79. I just assumed the OP was doing a similar swap or just needed to know what the different types of hubs to choose from to make sure he got the right ones.

Thanks for the replies guys. I looked at the truck tonight but didn't see your replies in time.
Yes, the truck has the correct high pinion Dana 44 that should be on a 77.5-79 F250. I am just trying to figure out what the correct style locking hubs will be for this axle. The seller claims that the outer axle shafts were swapped out for stronger units and also that the hubs were swapped to take the external hubs that you would typically see on an HD Dana 44 low pinion.
Is this something you guys have seen or heard of people doing? The rest of the truck looked good, but just want to figure out what's going on here so I'm not in too much of a mess if/when I bring it home.

I had some time to do some more searching, looks like this topic has been covered before:

I'm guessing that's what he did.

Yes it is possible. I swapped everything from the knuckles out including the outer stub shafts on my Dana 44 high pinion 1978 Bronco 1/2 ton to the larger components from a 1976 F 250 Dana 44 HD low pinion. It allowed me to match the 8 bolt pattern of the already swapped in Dana 60 rear as well as giving bigger rotors, two piston calipers, and the bolt on drive flanges in place of any locking hubs right now. If I had the money I would have swapped a Dana 60 in the front but I already had 2 donor 44 HD axles so that the way I chose to go.
