Anyone running the HEI distributor setup?

Don't flame me for using GM parts on my ford. Im ordering the cheapest new wiring harness I can find, and it calls for an HEI distributor to be used.

What brand HEI are you using, and how do you like it?

I'm going to be running one once I get the old distributor out. Absolute pain to remove it on my truck

i put a HEI distributor in two years ago. I bought it from a local machine shop for $100. It works great. It's probably a Chinese eBay one. However I do want to go with Davis unified ignition. They will change out the advance springs for your application. The only down side is the cap is HUGE and I had to grind my t stat housing and slot one of the bolt holes so I can slide it on and off with out pulling the dizzy itself.

At one time I did have an HEI distributor in Ka'Bluey, but when we did the engine swap, there was a difference in the shaft, so I couldn't use it.
But right from the beginning there was a huge improvement. I bought mine off of ebay,, 8 or 10 years ago.

I am using one from Summit. Works great and only uses 2 wires. Only thing is, it sits up much higher than stock so I had to go with a smaller air filter.

The HEI is a great way to go. Your engine compartment is cleaner that the outside of Ka'Bluey.
I have a feeling there's something to the pink under the hood.

I just put a Proform HEI from Advance Auto in my 302. It has worked perfect and I haven't looked back. I went through 3 brand new distributors, 4 new boxes and 3 coils to keep getting intermittent spark, switched to hei and she never misses a beat.

A Phenolic spacer works wonders.

I know this is an old thread, but I just order my HEI dizzy from summit - what do I need to do different to wire it in... I bought the HEI adapter.

Thanks!

I'm running the Summit HEI. SUM-850025. Had it a little over a year and I have no complaints. It is a little large, so you may have to play with your air cleaner setup. I also had to clock it 90 degrees counter-clockwise to clear a Holley 4150. But if you're running a Motorcraft 2150, Edelbrock, or one of the cheaper Holley's you won't have to clock the distributor.

Cool, that is the one I ordered! I am still running a Motorcraft 2150 for now. My question is with the wiring on installation: Am I assuming right that this will bypass the ICM? or rather, how do I properly wire it in (2 wires vs. the OME 3-wire). is there a install diagram for the 400m motor?

Thanks!
Danny
