Toyhauler A/C

My wife and I are looking at some travel trailers. Probably either a 5th wheel with back bunkhouse or a toyhauler we could make into a back room. My question is does any of the top A/C units get cooling into the garage area? I had a friend who had a new KZ toyhauler a couple of years ago, but I don't remember his garage getting any of his cooling from his 2 ac units. I appreciate any feedback

Also, my truck is a 1994.5 PSD F350 4x4 standard cab with drw and a flatbed. I've been told that flat beds sit higher than normal beds, what does that do to me getting a 5th wheel hitch installed?

Thanks

I got a call last week to add a 3rd AC unit to a toy hauler. Owner said it was prepped for a third unit.

I've seen the ones prepped for a 2nd, but 3, I bet that draws some amps

Our front unit is ducted to the living area and garage. Cooling in the 12' garage sucked so we added a second unit back there. The second unit is not ducted and only cools the garage. One of these days I'd like to block the garage ducted vent off so the air from the front unit all stays up front. Trailer is 37' and we have 2 15K units. It does much better keeping cool now. I would be sure any trailer has the bigger 15k unit up front, and then add another 15K to the garage area. They aren't that much more than the 13.5 units.

At least one member on here has 3 units (Karl4Kat) on his trailer but he's pushing 45'. It uses a load management system that keeps the units from starting up at the same time and causing excessive amp draw.

For cooling I'd have to guess the TH models would cool the "bunkhouse" (garage) better than a standard rear bunkhouse, as standard 5th's tend to add the second a/c in the master bedroom. The new mid bunkhouse plans might be better. We use ours the same way you intend, the garage is a second bedroom, or a big living area when it rains.

Thanks for the feedback. The 5th wheels with the mid bunk house are my top pick I think. Especially when they have the overhead loft (as do the toy haulers that I've looked at). I think that loft gives you a lot of storage/sleeping space options.

Yes to the insulation, found that out when I looked under.
How can they consider it an arctic package if you do not insulate everything?

Mine is like that. No insulation on the floor. Since no garage, all open that mean one cold floor.
Going to add insulation soon...

When I roll out the carpet I put 1/2" padding under it. Helps a bunch.

Resurrecting this thread. I too, want to add a second A/C to garage as 1 A/C is not sufficient in a 38' trailer, especially when garage floor has no insulation (yet)

So, I ran underground romex from the front hatch through the door side duct to a box I installed at the rear hatch. While at it, I added 2 vents at the front hatch, blocked the duct runs just past the main salons last vent. This blocked air going to the garage. I also did what is called in the Heartland owners club, the TimK mod. Essentially you pull down the A/C cover and build a pitched diverter to direct air more efficiently to each of the 2 duct runs. while in that space, I found there was a space between the intake and output where output air would have gotten sucked back instead of down into the unit. I also checked every vent to make sure everything was sealed. I found the worst in the area of the front hatch where there are ducts terminating in that area that were not closed off well. At the very least, one should pull the cover, 4 screws, and make sure the ends are sealed up. Air blows much better now. Should have no problem cooling main salon and bedroom. Garage will get a new 13.5K unit with heat option in the spring. Open slider and some of that cool air will help the main salon.

We just purchased a 2017 Palomino Puma, garage has it's own A/C but doesn't have heat. I did a little research and there is a add on kit to add electric heat in garage. From our small experience this will be satisfactory for a heat source, doesn't blow hot air but about 75degree air which is plenty to keep it comfortable back there. I added E-track to strap our RZR down back there and discovered the floor is indeed insulated. May not be as much as the cabin or bedroom but it appeared to be enough to make a difference.

The floor, walls and ceiling are insulated in my Toy Hauler, but no heat/AC is ducted back there.. i have a single 15k BTU AC and a prep for the front. While it does take a while to cool down from 100 to 80, it is only drawing 15 AMPS on startup and 12 AMPS while running according to my Progressive EMS.
