Finally got my truck but it has a miss. How to diagnose

No compression in cylinder #4. Best case, broken valve spring. Worst case, the head has to come off. $500 if it's the spring and to put a Time Sert in place of the crappy insert in there now. Getting ready to make my second payment and I still haven't even registered the truck yet. Can't even begin to describe how beat down, broken, and foolish I feel right now......

Burnt valve. Need to pull the head and if they pull one, should do both. And might as well put inserts in the other 7 holes, replace timing chains, water pump,...........to the tune of $4,000. The seller said he would make it right but I don't think he will go for this. I found a complete 5.4 with 25,000 fewer miles and a 6 month warranty for $1,150. If he covers that I will do it. If not I will pursue legal action.

Tell me about it. I really like this truck but I don't think it likes me at all. Told the seller yesterday I would give him the contact info for the shop so he could speak to them to show I'm not trying to pull a fast one. Still haven't heard back yet but I sent a message today about the issue and the sticker shock. Also contacted the Seattle BBB and got the number of the Washington Attorney General, just in case. I know I bought it As Is but As Is was described to me as "running great". Honestly, if he were to cover the cost of the replacement I could put it in myself and, even though it would suck as I'd rather be driving it, I might go for that, even though I shouldn't have to turn a wrench.

As of Monday the truck is back together and running great! I had to pull the cab to get to the engine. I bought a used engine from the salvage yard that turned out to be a turd. Fortunately we discovered this before attempting a swap. Got full money back on that and decided to pull the heads and fix mine. Had the heads serviced and inserts put in all 8 holes so I never have to worry about that again. All new timing set and gaskets, stainless manifold studs and we were good to go. The inside of my engine looks absolutely new so I'm glad we stuck with it. Also got the seller to cover half the engine cost and half the labor. Didn't tell him I was doing the work myself so he basically covered all the parts and machine work.
I'm just glad to have this fiasco, that started June 4th, over with.
