The gears themselves should float on the shafts. The only things locked to the output shaft should be the slider hubs(splined). If the gears were permanent then you would be stuck in that gear.
I see a problem here:
That groove you see in the brass should lock into the three tabs on the slider hub. If they aren't it will bind up(like it is in gear). The brass rings should be floating free when all assembled.

Got my tranny back in and everything runs fine with the exception of fifth gear... It pops out lol. Speedometer is acting funny too, it's just kindof all over the place but somewhat accurate to my speed. I'd best describe it as bouncing as I accelerate.
When I initially took apart the rear housing where the reverse and fifth gears are these flew out. When I was assembling it I looked for where they might go and couldn't find anything. The ball doesn't go on the output shaft because I already have that ball there

Remember this picture:
That arm in the upper left corner is 5-R. I'm pretty sure there is a detent spring/ball that holds it in location. Likely where that ball came from. You have to rotate the arm out of the way to get it installed. Does the shifter move really easy into 5-R? It should have a "notch" kinda feel to hold it in place. The weight of the handle could literally pull it out of gear going down the road.
The bouncing speedo? That is the cable binding up. Remove it from the transmission. The gear should spin smoothly with your fingers. If it feels tight, then it needs some lubrication on the inner cable. Common issue with older cable speedometers.

Sorry, but the obvious seems to need pointing out in this case ...
When disassembling an item, then reassembling it ... Left overs = wrong!
They weren't in there for extra weight!
It never should have been finished or installed until one knows EXACTLY for sure why there are left overs!
-Enjoy
