supposed to be the same length? I had to cut the left one down 3/16" to get the bearing to seat properly. I hate troubleshooting stuff others have cobbled together.

B7TZ-4234-A (replaced B7C-4234-A) .. Ford 9" Rear Axle / R & L is the same / Obsolete

Applications: 1957/67 F100.

Pic: See 11th entry in Column left for specs.

Thank you Numbers Dumby,

I wonder what the problem is with my rear axle housing assy. The previous owner swapped out the whole rear end assy instead of just the 9" pumpkin, and I have no idea what I have under the truck.

The drivers side axle walked out on me and when I went to put it back in the axle bottomed out on the pin inside of the 9" unit. I have 4 axles that are all the same length that came out of the original assemblies.

They all fit on the pass side, they were all too long for the drivers side. I put a new bearing on the axle, it is pressed all of the way on, I tried all of the axles on both sides. They only fit on the pass side.

1968/72 F100 with 9" & 28 spline axle shafts: C8TZ-4234-A .. Axle Shaft / Right/Left is the same. 15th entry in Column left.

Beginning in 1968, the rear brakes are 11" x 2 1/4" / 1957/67 F100: Rear brakes are 11" x 1 3/4."

If the axle shafts are right and left specific, the 9" is from a car, Bronco or Econoline. But none of these rear axles would be the correct width.

I'm thinking when they went to 2 1/4 inch brakes the axles stayed the same overall length but the housing was narrowed to accommodate the wider brakes and maintain the same wheel track. When they did that they had to move the shoulder that the axle bearing seats on inboard. So if you try to use a 1965 axle in a 68-72 housing the axle will bottom out before the bearing seats.

Gotcha, all four of my axles were the same length. Could the housing be damaged, therefore the right axle needs to be shorter?

Housings

What dose your housing look like? The pictures are of a 1965, the painted one and the dirty one is a 1968. Both of these housing will bolt right into a 65 but the axles will not swap from one to the other.

Both housings have the center hump like the dirty one above, one of mine has a drain plug on the backside. All 4 axles are ~29 1/4" long to the axle flange. The measurement to the bearing seat is ~28 1/8". They are 28 spline.

The axles that came out of that housing are also around 29 1/4 long but they are 27 5/8 to the bearing seat.

I measured to the "bottoming out point" of the bearing seat, are there differences there as well?
