9" center section differential ???
I have a 79 f-150 4x4 and have junked out a 78 lincoln w/ a 9" that has a good working posi in it. My question is without pulling the carrier out of the truck to check axle splines , does anyone know if the lincoln & the f-150 have the same number of splines??
Thanks For the HELP!!!

The spline counts are different, but the Lincoln (assuming that one has disc brakes as most do) rear is worth $$ to anyone wanting a 9" for their race car.
If you can get it cheap I'd grab the whole rear end for resale. I get $250 for them when I part out old Lincolns.

9" center section differential ???
The same box. It even has the same part number stamped in the casing.
It is a 9" 2.75 geared disc brake rearend. I checked the tag myself. The brake pads on the front are the same part number as my 77 F150 as well. The car has a big bolt pattern on the lugs, I am not sure if it is 5x5 or 5x5.5". I'll have to measure it tomorrow.

9" center section differential ???
my4604x4,
The splines on the trucks are either 28 or 31 and the lincoln is most likely 28. It seems that most 2wd trucks and some f100/f150 4x4s had 28 splines. As I understand it, the "light duty" f series are the ones with the 28s. I don't know that any of the cars ever came with 31s, but I could be wrong.
Pulling the axle is really an easy thing to do, assuming you can get the brake drum off. You just have to take off the wheel, drum, and 4 nuts holding on the retaining plate, and the axle should slide right out.

True, I have 2 77's. My F100 has 31 spline and my F150 has 31 splines. I had a 78 F150 that was a 300 I-6, it was 28 spline. My 77's are V8's. So anything is possible. I am quite sure that the Lincoln is 28 spline. I have a 77 Mark V with a 9" disc brake rearend in it. That is where the 460 for my 77 F150 came from.

9" center section differential ???
hi, not to offend but a couple of mistakes were posted here and i would like to make sure they do not become gospel. first very few trucks had 28 spline axles after 73, the vast majority are 31 spline. second the lincoln is 28 spline. third the lincolns had 5 X 4.5 bolt patterns on rear drum cars and 5 X 5 on disc brake cars while the trucks are 5 X 5.5 so none of the brake stuff will work as is. fourth the lincoln steering box is not at all the same as a truck, some of the components of the box are the same and do have the same casting number but not all of the parts and they are quite different if you put them side by side. and lastly, i don't know where you guys are from but here in CA, those lincoln 5 X 5 disc brake rearends are not worth a plug nickel. the local pick and pulls are full of them and nobody wants them. the only lincoln rearend with real value is the hawkrod versaille unit and it does not share any parts with its big brither.
