It's not worth it to go to a newer auto. Trying to get the PCM and TCM to talk would be a nightmare I imagine.

IMO a zf-5 swap is the way to go but if you want an auto John Woods builds a good E40D, right Glenn?

i could see why. The E4 and 4R are both relatively simple, especially ehen compared to the 5R110. The 5R has soooo much more electronics involved

Yeah, I don't know why I typed 100 instead of 110. Must have been thinking of the 4R100 in the earlier SD trucks. 5R110 is what I meant. I'll go back and correct my error.

From what I have heard the 5R110 isn't as easily tuned as the 4R100, and some drag racers prefer the 4R to the 5R for the quicker shifting capabilities. It sure seems like a good truck transmission though.

Edit: There, all better!

I would just get a built E4OD if I were to do it. John Woods isn't the only option out there.

FML. POS FORD BROKE AGAIN. FUEL SELECTOR VALVE BURNED UP 500 MILES AWAY FROM HOME. STUCK ON THE SMALL TANK AND GAUGES NOT WORKING. FORD WANT 500.00 cheap no name is 75.00 but you use hose clamps and have to re wire it. I've had 2 of them in the past on a dunebuggy and they did not last 1 month. Is there a better option? I want duel tanks but may have to hardline the large one and add a pump to transfer the small tank to the large tank.

Dude I feel for you...

but would the selector valve cause the gauges to not work? You could go off of mileage to get home at least... that's what I did getting from ND to TX when I got laid off.

I've had one of the parts store ones on my Bronco for a few years now without issue. Just don't get one from a junk yard. The seals dry out quickly when not in use. You could get a used one from someone parting out a truck that hasn't been sitting too long.

This one was a used on. Worked great when i put it in. I used it 1 time and was good flipped tanks and worked. Went to flip back and the fuel gauge went way too far. I knew it was busted then. Lucky for me i was in a town to fill the small tank. I did not know what tank was feeding the engine. I was afraid it was stuck between the front and rear tank. Like the gauges. I ordered a new ford part on amazon for 305. I hope they have improved the design. Do you have to use them all the time to keep them working? Seems like it just jams or shorts out and burns up. That thing gets really hot. I unpluged it but that made the battery light flicker on and off.

I do use mine regularly. I have pulled 3 from junk yards to use on my Bronco and all of them leaked from the start.

Yes, the selector valve switches both the feed lines and the gauge wiring to the tanks at the same time, so when it malfunctions you can lose the gauge function as well.

Man, that sucks. I had mine fail on me (mostly due to my own stubbornness) and I replaced it with a used one that has worked flawlessly (so far- knock on wood). $300 for that thing is ridiculous. Hopefully that one lasts as long as the original did for you.

Dumb question. What about replacing the selector valve with a tee and using fuel from both tanks at the same time? Wouldn't matter which fuel level sender is active since both tanks will be at the same level. Only problem I see is when they get real low one tank might start sucking air while the other may still have a bit of fuel left.

I believe a few of us have put a 38 gal rear tank in so it would definitely be sucking air.

Yeah, you'd have to install some sort of balance tube between tanks to keep the levels equalized.

If fuse #6 in the in cab fuse panel blows, it will make the gauge read funky also. This fuse also is for the AC clutch.
