Here's where I am at.
Dropped the pan and found plenty of metal on the magnet. Also found the original tranny dipstick plug the factory puts in during assembly. Likely telling the tranny pan has never been dropped in all of it's 190k miles.

Tested the wiring of the harness within the pan and tested out okay. Checked the ohms of the solenoid block with three pin outs and got 50 ohms on one set and 25 ohms on the other two. Tested the single solenoid and got 13 ohms. Thought I read it should be between 20-50 which would correlate to the other block. So I checked the new solenoid I bought and same ohm readings. So, got an atv battery and jumped the pins of the old solenoid. Got a little click, click. Well then, tested the new solenoid and got the same click, click.

I think there might have been some metal in the contacts but that metal came from somewhere and the really weird temperature readings (-190s) leads me to believe there was electrical issues.

What do y'all think? Wife's hoping for a convertible out of all this, I'm not ready for another payment.

I think that transmission is just about finished.

The temperature sensor ranging out on both ends sounds like some of the metallic debris was interfering with the sensor's operation (spikes one way, akin to an unplugged sensor), then shorts the connector terminals together to make it spike the other way (no resistance in sensor)

As for the other maladies, it sounds like one of two things:
1. the switched 12v feed to all of the solenloids is damaged, making them only work intermittently.
2. the solenoids can test electrically good on the bench, but still fail a leak test due to age and heat. Time to Mityvac them

Talked to a tranny shop local and hearing the story and tests they conclude and I agree there are internal things going bad in there. So a rebuild to the tune of $2500.

This has come at a really bad time. I am thinking I might be able to find a tranny swap place local or on the internet and swap it myself for less. I thought I had a 4r100 but it it definately not. Thinking I have the 4r75w then from what I am reading. Here is my door tag to help decode. Full info on vehicle is 5.4l, 4x4.

I've swapped engines and trannys before so not shy of the work. Trying to save as much money as possible. Any leads on what the tranny is for sure and inexpensive but reliable places to pick one up in the sacramento area or to have one shipped would be a great help.

I was worried for a moment. I hadn't heard of the 4r85e and when I used the link with my vin, it showed 4r75w.
By the way, thanks for the cool link. I didn't know that existed.

Sorry ... I typo'd it ..... Twice

Didn't catch it the second time

Stupid smart phone....

When searching for a replacement be mindful of the year of the donor vehicle. At some point they changed it from a 75w to a 75e and there are some electrical differences between the two. Not 100% sure about the backwards compatibility, but others can help with the finer details.

Shop just called with great news. They know what's wrong with it. Tranny' s 3rd gear is gone, and the front differential is going out. So $4k to fix. Car when in working condition is only kbb $4k. Arghhhh!

Buy a tranny from a junkyard for a few hundred and swap it out yourself. Then go and trade it in or sell it.

I was actually just going to post that we brought it home without being repaired. Our hope is we can find some junkyard or someone parting one out cheap enough to fix it then sell it for at least more than scrap metal prices.

Does anyone know if I can swap in a 4r70w from a 2003 expedition with the 5.4? I found a guy parting out the whole car for $350 with a bad engine.

From what I'm reading it won't work because of an extra rear speed sensor?
Junkyard trans are $900+tax around here, ugh.

That is one of the differences between the E and W. IIRC, the other speed sensors count at a different frequency making them non useable as well.

If you have a W you need a W. If you have an E you need an E. As best I understand it, anyway.

$900 is a whole lot better than $4,000. Got any friends that owe you favors? Doesn't cost much to rent a jack and a solid weekend probably gets it done even I you've never done a transmission before.

Very true, but it pays to be picky. As the old adage goes, there's a sucker born every minute and automatic transmissions are a big target to be scammed on.
