Distributor

Has anyone ever used the 1 wire HEI distributors or a Pertronix distributor? I'm changing from EFI to carb and looking to use one of these types but would like some experienced advice first please.

Doing this in what ? Pertronix is easy, just two wires. If you've got a roller cam in the engine, you'll need a steel geared distributor. The so called "one wire" distributors are huge and fuggly on a 302.

The one I purchased is from summit racing ready to run. It's a small cap distributor so it doesn't have the big gm cap

Yea, that'll work. The GM type HEI unit is the one that's fuggly and looks completely out of place on a Ford.

What vehicle is this going in ? If it's something that had an early EFI setup, then a Duraspark unit could be the way to go. That way there could be nothing to rewire, just plug it in and go.

If I could find a vehicle that had the wiring harness, module, and distributor than I would have went that way for sure

I might have a duraspark harness, I'll look today. Won't have the distributor or the spark box, but you can buy those new at the parts house. If you've got a roller cam, then you'll need an 85 GT Mustang reman distributor for a manual transmission car to get one with the steel gear. You can get these too locally

I appreciate the help, let me know but I have already bought the aftermarket one. I haven't pulled the valve covers to see if its a roller or not but I don't think they were in 86 but could be totally wrong.

Musta missed that. Sorry. It'll have a roller block with a flat tappet cam then.
