If there's a hill in front of me, the cruise control mashes the gas pedal, trying to keep up at 65 while everybody else is slowing down to 50. And if I'm driving down hill, it brakes and that annoys me! Everybody else is going 75. That's why a steady foot is far better.. and so is flexibility with the speed.
I've heard bad things about the 2.7. The turbo is always kicking in because it lacks power and that makes it worse overall.
Not saying it can't be done, but it can't be done by me! I'm happy I've broke 18 MPG!
I averaged 19.2 Hand Calculated over a 1500 mile trip, while averaging 85MPH (GPS verified) with the AC on the whole time two weeks ago. Mine is a 2wd RCSB 5.0/3.55 though.

I averaged 21 mpg (20 mpg there, 22 mpg return) on my 1700 mile trip to Grand Canyon and Vegas.

4X4 5.0v8 and 3.31 gears.

Kinda doubt I'll do that well to Bright Angel Lodge in a month. Probably because I have a boosted 3.5 and 3.55 gears. Can't have anything to do w/the 25' boat that'll be tailgating me.

I was really proud of myself with a lifetime average of 19.5 mpg... Until Summer hit and I'm traveling each weekend to go ATVing... Now it's dropped to 18.4 mpg.
With that said I really need to beat on the engine to drop under 19 mpg for my daily commute.
I wonder how many guys fill up with gas, get on the highway up to speed, set the cruise and reset the MPG meter. It doesn't give an accurate MPG read because of excelling from a dead stop, etc.
Not saying the OP did this, but alot of time I wonder about reported MPG numbers.
Between Grand Canyon and Vegas are hills and mountains... Indiana's flat. Same here, I get around 24 or 25 on a very flat surface. Going from Los Angeles to San Diego, it is all flat.
I reset my MPG meter at the gas station, not when I'm going 70 mph on the freeway.

I'm not quite as **** as Wiggums about gas mileage, but I track it pretty well. I like to reset Trip A when I fill up, and the MPG screen before I start the truck in the morning. I also log all my tanks.
I log all my gas purchases along with the deltas between the console and actual fuel usage. The trip meters I use for other things (not tracking MPG). I reset the console at each fillup, before I drive out on the street.
I get about 15-15.5 around town, 21-23 hwy, what really impresses me over my last few ecos is the towing mileage. 12-13 loaded with 9500+ ac and 3 adults. Not bad if you ask me.
