I've had an NP435 ('85 F-250) and a T-18 n('75 CJ5). The lack of a 1st gear syncro was occassionally an issue, but for the most part didn't really matter. You need to come to a stop to shift into 1st quietly, but since you only use 1st for starting from a dead stop it wasn't really an issue (off-roading in the Jeep it was sometimes a problem when I needed to grab a lower gear on a hill).

And the T-18 came with a 4:1 1st gear as well. I know Jeep used the close-ratio version. I think most other applications were the wide-ratio with around a 6.3:1 1st. But that is another close-ratio option if you want it and can't find a diesel T-19.

Does anybody have a good source for T-18/19 bellhouses? It seems the 460 4x4 is less common than I realized. A found one on craigslist 2 hours from me, but that's about it. I can order one online for 660, used, but that seems like an expensive gamble. There is a 5 year warranty though....

There shouldn't be any difference in the bellhousings between a 2WD and a 4WD (but the 460/manual trans combo wasn't real common so they still aren't a dime a dozen).

460/manual is what I meant to say....found one an hour east of me for 400, including t-case. Would I be able to use the same transmission crossmember?

That is a good price honestly. Check it for stress cracks. Not sure which case it would be, either a 208 or 1354 I would think.
Your trans cross member may work. Worst case you may have to slide it ahead an inch or whatever and drill a new set of holes.

I am having the ZF5 repaired but have decided to go ahead and buy the T-19 4x4 with the big block bell housing for $400. I will decide which one I like better and either sell the other or store it until I talk my wife into letting me build a big block galaxie.
