complete Rewire

Hey guys kinda new here. I have a 92 f150(302 v8) and recently have been told by a mechanic that i need to have the wiring completely redone. Apparently when i had bought it in NM someone had spliced and re-spliced and just botched it.

So my real question is, is it worth it to rewire it myself or just pay someone else to do it?

Any and all advice appreciated thanks!

I don't have an answer but I would love to see what others have to say. My truck went from EFI 5.8 to Carb 460, and all sorts of stuff was rigged up. I can hardly read a wiring diagram, and would not be comfortable doing it myself, but would love to have my truck rewired and clean-looking under the hood.

IMO Best thing you can do is find replacements from salvage yards ...

Paying someone to re-wire is expensive, it's time consuming, especially to do it right!

Welcome aboard.

What is all botched? Underhood/motor or everywhere?

You can buy aftermarket harnesses for the basics, but if the EFI needs all rewired too, that will be a whole nuther issue. Better to try to find a truck and buy it for the harness and just replace yours. Though likely hard to find one that hasn't been butchered up in some way?

I'll have to look around I just moved to PA. And I'm not sure what actually needs to be done the guy said that I have wires that don't go anywhere grounds that are just hanging. I always kinda figured something was up with it because the radio always has to be turned on and doesn't hold presets.

Does the car run? If so, why mess with something that runs.

Yeah it runs now but 2 days ago I had to get it towed from a gas station cause it was dead and nothing came on. So I would rather get it squared away than have to get it towed again

Are you sure it's not the battery?

Because those are the exact type of things that will bite you at the most inappropriate time or location ...

I'm probably stupid for asking, but could it be as simple as the ignition cylinder being bad

I don't think so I think somewhere along the line someone didn't wire something right so one of the wires is shorting out on the body or something plus it wouldn't be too bad of thing if I got it all replaced
