Couple of 300 questions
Have a couple 300 questions for you guys. Will the hd truck super duty exhaust work with all of the 4 barrel intakes out there? I thought I read somewhere once that some only work with headers. I'm not sure if my project would allow the use of efi manifolds or headers. And I like the look of that hd truck manifold. Other headers may interfere with a drive shaft on that side of the engine. Secondly and possibly most important is I need the length from the rear of the block face to the water pump/fan pulley face. Like if I were to run an electric fan. Is there a difference between v belt and serpentine lengths? Any suggestions on a cam for a 3300 lb vehicle with a 4 speed and 3.73s and 235/85r16(32s)? Also looking for recommendations on carb size. Although the clifford performance double Weber setup has caught my eye lately. Last question I think. Which side does the water inlet and outlet face?

Best I can measure the engine is 34" to the fan mounting flange to rear.
Cam selection is pretty subjective, especially depending on what you're using the vehicle for.
Most 300s only need about a 350cfm carb but I've run a 600 cfm Edelbrock with no worries. Again, kind of depends on what you're using the vehicle for.

AMC 258 should be the similar, if not the same as the more modern 242.
As for the Electric Fan, I have the two speed single fan from some Taurus installed with the 300, but I used the Serpentine belt setup. The Serpentine belt allowed for a bit more space for the Electric and eased the 3g alternator install and the Saginaw Pump I grabbed from a Van. Here's a link to my Fans: Passenger Side Driver Side
While it looks close, and it is. There is a gap of about 3/4" behind the Fan Motor and the front of the belts, but I lucked out and was able position the motor in a small pocket for ease of mind. I also sunk the fan into the Radiator frame for a lower profile fit, while leaving the fan blades away from the rad fins by a small space.

I'm mostly trying to see how much room I'll have in my engine bay if I put a 300 in it. I know a 258 will fit...but I don't want one in there. I want to put my favorite engine in my favorite vehicle. My 81 cj8. I did find someone that has one in the cj7 but I couldn't get in touch to get info.

I don't want the 4.0 or the 258 in there though. Everybody has those in their cj. I much prefer the 300 over them. If I'm taking the time to put in all new mounts and transmission and a radiator in there then the only extra work over the other options is the fact that I have to fab up engine mounts. That should only take about a half hour of trial and error. And I'm going with stuff that is all available when my jeep was made back in 81. I can't find the truck I want with the 300 so I may as well combine my favorite things by putting a 300, and a t18 in my jeep with 235/85r16 tires

I think I may be getting a rebuilt 95 engine with 20k on it then plugging the smog holes and adding a 4 barrel intake and the hd manifold. I'll probably go with the low end comp cam. With 33s and 3.73s and a t18 it should put me at a good cruising rpm. I think I found an aftermarket radiator that will let me set it even farther forward than the stock one. Every quarter inch counts I guess. Is the overall length of the 6 different with a serpentine setup over the old v belt? Assuming I'm not using a mechanical fan at all.

Went out and measured from the tip of the water pump (Where the EFI Fan screws onto) to the block surface which the pump bolts to, it's 13cm or 5.12" or 5 1/8"... so given a fudge factor in my measuring abilities, lets say an even 5"
On my setup, I positioned the fan motor over this pulley and it would interfere if the engine or radiator moves, but I suspect I would have bigger problems by then to worry about it. right now, I have about 2" space before it touches. Here's a pic of my setup on a '78 using the taurus 2spd fan and serpentine and saginaw ps pump (from econoline):

Mine is a '78 F150 which originally came with a 300, so and easy step to the EFI.
There are two different EFI aluminum power steering mounts, one for the Ford type pump, and the econoline for the saginaw ham can pump. Might be worth checking out if the one you have doesn't work out. Or go with older pre-EFI steel type mounts.
So, will this fit in a CJ?

I'm hoping. I still can't reach the guy who did do it. Reason for wanting to use the original power steering pump is that it has odd ends I guess on the hoses. I read somewhere that people swapping in ford engines like to use gm pumps because it's the same ends. I need to find some comparative data from a 258. And the engine bay of a cj. I'm moving and my cj8 is broken down and in 4 different locations right now. I'm trying to find the distance from the back of the head to the back of the radiator in a cj7/Cj8. If anyone here has one and could get that measurement it would be great. I asked a guy at the gas station yesterday if I could take a few quick measurements but he seemed kinda scared of me.
