95 Explorer Child Proof Doors
I have a 95 Explorer with "Child Proof" rear doors. I can't get the child proof feature to disengage so that you can open the rear doors from the inside (both doors are like this). Is there a simple trick that I am missing or is this going to be a tear the door apart project.
Thanks

I don't remember any door code that would automatically lock the rear like that, but I will check. The only way I knew to turn on the child lock was by the switches on the doors. It is wierd for both doors to quit at the same time.
You might try taking the door panel off and see if you can get to the switch from inside...

I think that possibly both your interior door handles are broken. This is a common problem since they are made out of cheap plastic. They are about $10/ each from the dealer. At least they were a few years ago. To replace you need to remove the interior door panels. This is an easy job. IIRC, there is one screw to remove near the door handle. You need to also remove the plastic trim piece around the door handle. Next remove the panel by pulling out the push connectors and lifting up. I generally do this with my hands. The are held in with plastic push connectors. You can also buy a door panel tool or use a putty knife. The handle is held in with one or two screws. Remove the screw(s) and disconnect the rod. Attach the rod and screws in the new door handle and replace the panel. I find it easiest to put all the push connectors into the panel. Attach the panel at the top and use butt of your hand to knock in the connectors. If you lose or mess up a connector they are cheap and available from the dealer, auto parts stores and home improvement stores. This is a one beer job. Easy and quick.

The door panels are fairly easy to do. You might want to stop by Auto Zone, or a local parts place and get a pin puller. It is a tool that helps you pull the pushpins that hold the panel to the door. You cn get them off without it, but for a first time removal, I would suggest getting one (makes it easier later too when you are familiar with it). There will be 2 screws around the door handle on the armrest you remove. Then you take a flathead screwdriver and put it between the door panel and the steel and twist to separate it some. You will find the pushpins and use the tool to pull them out of the door.
Take a look at this post: Look Here
This is talking about the front door, but the rear door is basically the same. There is a link in the thread that shows where the pins are located. They are basically the same on the rear doors also.
