I bought a 1987 F350 2wd with the 7.5 liter 460. It has the T-19 4 speed manual transmission. My starter fell out at 65 mph. I had it towed home, put in a new starter from autozone, truck started but there was a horrible grinding noise. Pulled the starter and the teeth were chewed up pretty good on the starter. I pulled the flywheel cover and checked out the flywheel, there is no play, no chips or cracks that I can see. I was just going to change the flywheel but I wanna avoid all that work if its not necessary. So i've come to the conclusion my starter is grinding on the flywheel. When I go to autozone they do not give an option for a manual transmission starter, they keep telling me they are the same, which I know their not. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking I just have the wrong starter, does anyone have a part number for the manual transmission starter? Thanks.

Also the starter that fell out has 9 teeth, the current starter also has 9 teeth. The chips on the starter drive are on the very edges, i'd say about 1/8" chipped off 4 of the teeth. This truck has been nothing but problems since I bought it, someone help me.

 

Do you have the old starter that fell out?
Or was it destroyed?

I agree that there should be a difference between a manual and an automatic.

Try looking at Napa or O'Reillys website and see if they show a different starter.

 

Ya I've got the old one, looks just like the new one, same part number too. Coulda been why the old one was only holding by one bolt idk. My next step is to find someone to pull start it and see if it grinds I guess

 

Oreilly and Napa are the same, don't have an option for auto or Manual trans

 

it is supposed to have a Lester #3174 on it. Make sure there is a steel plate between the bell housing and the transmission. They do show the starters coming with shims. Never had to use them on a Ford but I guess there is always a first time.

 

I just checked at NapaOnline and they show different starters for my 1997 7.5L

The nose depth of manual and automatic starters were always different in the older SBF offerings.

 

I'll check Napa again prolly missed it, autozone keeps giving me #3152

 

For whatever reason, RockAuto only shows one starter up to the 1991 model year. Starting with the 1992 model year, they show two different starters. I suspect places like AdvanceAuto, RockAuto, AutoZone, etc... all get their parts-interchangeability data from the same source, and that source has an error in their documentation.

For what it's worth, RockAuto shows the manual transmission starters for the 1992 Model Year as being:

I'd try asking for a starter for a '92 model year 460 manual, and see if that works any better.

 

I'll try that tomorrow, unfortunately not getting spark out of the blue but I can handle that. Just looking up a 92 starter I seen it has the solenoid mounted to the starter whereas previous ones did not, I'm assuming it shouldn't be hard to wire it up just curious.

 

Ford went to a PMGR starter in '92
I retrofitted one to my '87.

You need to add a trigger wire from the fender relay and move the starter cable to the 'hot' stud.

There is a difference when you switch from bendix to a solenoid throwout.

I'm going to suggest that your starter is either not indexing correctly in the engine plate or the threads for the lower bolt (into the bellhousing) are really sloppy and could use a helicoil.

 

Got a pmgr starter today gonna get it put in tomorrow, hopefully that works.ill keep you all posted thanks so far.

 

I feel for ya! I've been through two flywheels and a bunch of starters trying to figure out my issues. I think it had to do with a lower mounting hole that was stripped and then re-tapped off-center. I'll find out in the next few days.....

 

Update: got the pmgr starter mounted and wired, replaced the icm and it fired right up, no grinding or anything else thought I just had the wrong starter and problem solved. Wrong soon as I put the driveshaft in and the pto driveshaft (it's got a 480 Holmes wrecker on it) I fired it up and the grinding came right back. So it sounded like the pto was stuck partially on so I unhooked the driveshaft for the pto and the cable. Tried starting it, out of gas, I must have a leak somewhere. Poured some gas in it and In the carb and it started but was still grinding. Im at a loss, I don't think the main shaft would make it grind?

 

Hold the phone, are you saying the horrible grinding sound continues after the engine is started?

 

Ya I don't get any grinding while cranking just starts grinding about 5 seconds after its running.
