Truck problems

I have a 1992 f250 with the 5.8, and I can't figure out what tranny i have. I just replaced almost all the clutch components, and now it isn't shifting worth a damn. In order to get moving, i have to start the truck in gear, and it's hell to shift it from there. I can't start it and put it in gear like I normally would, and I have no idea why. Anybody got any ideas?

welcome to FTE.
this is not a trans issue, it is a clutch issue.
either the clutch master cylinder is empty, the master cylinder or slave cylinder is bad, or the slave cylinder is not connected to the throw out fork.

I replaced the master and slave cylinders, the hydraulic line, the quick connect for the line, pressure and clutch plate, and the throwout bearing. The slave and master are both full, and the systems been bled very thoroughly. It feels like I'm losing first gear, and I'm not getting enough pressure on the clutch

still a clutch issue, not a trans issue. the clutch is not releasing completely.
if the clutch was working properly, you could put the truck in gear with you foot on the pedal, or stop with the truck in gear and then take it out of gear and put it in another gear.

As others have stated, It's a clutch issue not a transmission issue.

You have (one or more of)
  • A torn firewall where the master bolts on.
  • Clutch pedal that is not allowing the Master to completely release, Ensure there is a tiny bit of play on the push rod between Master and Clutch Lever.
  • Master Push Rod bushing failure or improper installation
  • Failing/Failed Master
  • Failing/Failed Slave
  • Air in the System
  • Broke Bell housing
  • Damaged or Improperly installed Throw out fork or pivot
  • Improperly installed or wrong Throw out Bearing
  • Improperly installed or wrong Pressure Plate
  • Improperly installed (backwards) or wrong Clutch disk!

Do this, Motor off, Parking brake on, Wheels chocked, Get a helper, Grab a measuring device crawl under the truck and measure the stroke of the Slave cylinder as your helper pushes the clutch all the way to the floor.

Post the result!

-Enjoy

correct, because the clutch is not releasing.

My guess: The input shaft has been bent.

Did you have to tighten the bellhousing bolts to get the transmission to seat? A bent shaft will screw up a pilot bearing and then it's all over. Does the clutch 'feel' like it is working right at the pedal? It could be a shoddy pressure plate, especially if you bought the cheapest clutch you could find-but even these failures are rare.

I know you don't want to hear this but you are gonna have to pull that trans again to find out what is wrong.

On the sticker in the drivers door jamb under "TRANS" a "W" would be a ZF 5-speed. An F250 with a 5.8 is guaranteed to have that tranny.

How did you get parts without knowing which trans you have?

no need to know. the only trans put in a 92 F250 with a 351 was the ZF 5 speed.

Not to mention all of the clutch parts between zf and mazda trans are interchangeable or exactly the same.

Your clutch isn't disengaging for reasons stated above....air in the system gets my vote. Bleed it some more.
