What 4sp trany are we talking about?

I am going to guess a T18 as that is what I have had the shifter handle out of.
First know when you put the "stick" back in the trany needs to be in neutral. If you look in the hole there should be a notch in each rail they all need to line up before you put the stick back in.

Now the stick should not "pull out". The cap should screw down to hold the pin and stick in place.
Oh this pin - the stick has a ball type thing it pivots on. This ball also has a notch and the trany tower should have a pin that fits in the stick ball notch. This pin can (will) fall out and can fall inside the trany = not good!

I do also have an SROD trany but don't remember how the stick comes out. I want to say I remember driving out 2 pins and the handle comes off but not "out of" the trany.

An '86 F150 with 302 should be fuel-injected, I believe. Things may have been altered. Check this out carefully!

I think ND Bill told us about the NP transmission, it has a similar hold-down/lock ring but it doesn't thread on, you're supposed to push down + twist but people don't know that and destroy the things by twisting them off... dunno if those have the same pin the BW transmissions have or not.

If it's an NP435, that ring is available in a $17.20 kit (near the bottom of the page) here...........

https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/...s/np435-parts/

You have to get pretty physical installing those retainers, against the pressure of the spring below it. It's do-able but not easy, with the trans still in the truck.

Easy way to tell: is the top of the gearbox aluminum or iron?

BW gearbox lids are iron, NP is aluminum.

Gary has posted about how difficult it was, and how he levered it down so he was able to turn the collar.

It may have been in the Rusty thread.

The ones I have dealt with, not on a NP, I did not think were too bad.
Push down on either side with large blade screwdrivers and turn 1/4 turn and if popped out.

Don't think I use the screwdrivers to install. Line everything up push down and turn.

Which 4 speed is it? Could be: New Process 435, Warner T-18, or RTS TS-OD Top Shift 4 Speed Overdrive.

TRANS code printed on the Certification Label, glued to the left door face below the latch. Post what it is.

I found this here:
It is easy to pull the t-case shifter, but if your tranny is the NP then it is a bit more difficult. The force required to turn the lock ring is pretty high and it took me several tries to get it, and leather gloves to easy the pain on the fingers. You have to push down HARD and then turn the ring to release the lever.

I have done it in place.....but as Gary says, you need something to save your fingers, then get in above the shifter to put as much downward force onto the ring as you can.

Otherwise maybe a piece of wood 18" long & drill a hole in the center, so it can be slipped over the shifter (kn*b removed); then use that to press down & rotate the ring. You might need a piece of rubber under the wood, to help grip the ring when you twist.
