new injector install advice needed on extended cranking

1999 e350 has 130k and original injectors, had a minor power loss while driving that i determined was injector o ring needing replacement since the fuel bowl also had black colored fuel. installed and have been cranking for about 4 days now and am recharging batteries again. whenever i changed any injectors in the past ive refilled both sides of the oil rails although on this one i didnt. so wondering what to expect concerning the process of filling oil rails via hpop. does have a hpx line, thanks, Ronjon

Don't need to refill the oil rails to get it to crank on the first day after just a few cranks. Did you pull a plug on the rail to drain the oil and forget to put it back in? That would cause you to not build pressure and cause a no start.

Any way to read ICP psi while cranking?

I just did injector orings this weekend. Took three tries at about 20 seconds each.

Same when I did my injectors a while ago.

I had to partially fill the oil rails on an '02 to get it to crank. It simply refused to do so until we did that. Until then I had never done that before. Now it is standard procedure to save wear and tear on the starter and other components.

If he had left a plug out of one of the rails wouldn't there be a substantial oil leak?

If a drain plug was left out, the oil would just leak back to the crankcase.

i didnt unscrew the plugs, left them in and let oil into cylinders and remove glow plugs before cranking. have valve covers on so oil doesnt get all over everything. i did paartially fill passenger side rail although at most 1/3 of a quart. from what ive been researching on here, extended cranking should be anticipated . on another truck ive replaced only one injector , filled oil rail and the thing fired right up so im kinda saying wtf this time around

When you're trying to crank it how long are you letting it crank? How long before the batteries are dead?

GP's are in of course, brand new icp from ford has about 3k miles on it, hpop oil level is a continuous 1/2" from top. The starter is a Denso style with 3K also , new Interstate batteries. When cranking , am turning engine for 15 seconds, and let off about a minute, and 2nd crank about 20 seconds. tomorrow im going to add more oil to the oil rails if possible because that is obviously a factor in cranking.

Lets think outside the box. How much fuel is the gauge showing?

You can monitor ICP volts? That's fine too. You need to see minimum 0.84 volts while cranking.

A few things:

I'd get those VCs off, you'll want to hot-torque the injectors anyway. Don't worry, it won't make a mess.

This is a first start when the oil rails were dead-empty - after replacing all the cups. Top-center number is critical (ICP), it needs to top 500 PSI before the injectors will fire.

This whole thing sounds like a bad IPR. You can pull it and shake it to hear if it rattles. If not, it may be gummed up.

my first inclination was bad ipr as ive had one go basd previously, and about a year ago i rebuilt it and only has about 3k on it also. When I removed injectorrs the lower o ring had plenty of blow by evidence so it was best to do them anyway. When they stick closed this sure seems like the same symptom. This morning I topped off each oil rail and they both did use about 3oz. of oil . i cranked it and batteries are low so charging them now . will post results in about 2 days when able to crank again. thanks everyone for the responses and wisdom, Ronjon
