Transmission leak

I have a c4 automatic in my truck and the tail shaft seal leaks. I don't know what the trans came out of as the previous owner did not know. Do all c4's use the same seal or do they vary based on model year or vehicle? Does anyone know what the part number would be?
Thanks

According to a quick Google search, it is a common seal. Any decent parts house should have it. I can think of no reason it would be application specific.

When I searched it the seal was from 65 to 85 or so. C4, C5 and AOD and one other one. Pick a year and get one I guess.

If you have to have a bad seal, the tail shaft seal is probably the easiest one on the truck to change. That's pretty cool, cheap and easy. Mine has those mystery leaks, you know the ones, they only leak when your not looking and are next to impossible to chase down.

The magic part number is.....SKF 14978. As per the Battle Lake Auto Value. Of course you'll probably have to come to Battle Lake to get the part.(hehe)

I would go by Bills number there. No doubt more accurate. My parts person, took her quite awhile to find the one I gave. Bill probably knew it by heart. Good luck.

If you are going to change the seal it would be worth the effort to check the yoke bushing as well. Most chronic seal issues arise from worn bushings that allow the yoke to move in directions for which it was not intended.

Thanks everyone,
I did buy the seal that bill had in his post. I found a good mechanic to replace the seal and also the bushing. He is also going to check the universal joints while the drive shaft is out.

Thanks again
