Installing belt, 1993 7.3 Non Turbo

On my 1993 7.3 non turbo the belt I got from Autozone is so tight I would have to stretch it and I mean really stretch it to get it on. The pack that it came in shows the 7.3 application. I checked and double checked the routing and it's correct. Fortunately I saved the old belt, but I did cut it off since I was going new on the go-back.......anyone had this issue?

thanks,

The new belt appears to be about a 1/2" shorter. I would attribute that to stretch. This would make me think I have the right belt and there is a better way to install the belt then what I am doing. Any Ideas?

Thanks

Take up the tension on the idler and it should just slip on

If you are pulling the tensioner all the way back and still having trouble getting the belt on, you have the wrong belt. There should be a scale and pointer on your tensioner. When the new belt goes on and the tensioner is released, the pointer should land mid scale.

A little harder with a new belt, but that's how it's done. Notice the pointer showing that belt is close to it's maximum stretch.

Yes releasing it in a counter clockwise motion, against the tension of the spring.

When you say Idler, I am believing you mean the pulley on the tensioner. And yes I am rolling the tensioner counter clockwise against the spring and it's a long ways from slipping on

So my belt is routed just like the one on the video. But I am trying to get it over the alternator pulley and not the tensioner pulley. I will give that a shot and see if she's bueno.........

the alternator has a lip, which does make it harder.
ive been through this, the tensioner is the best spot, no lip.
ive had issues with certain belts myself, trying to do it at the store,
i put my old one on, went home, used this method, and it went on like butter.

So this belt is no way no how. Now looking in O'Riely it looks there is a 1/2 dozen belts! There is something called a Leece Neville Alternator and if it has one of those it takes a different belt. I also read some things about different belts for Higher output alternators. Thinking maybe the Leece Neville may be the difference in the higher output alternators? My truck has the factory Trailer Package, Is there an easy way to tell what alternator it has?

Ideas?

The Leece Neville's are used on Ambulances.

I cannot describe the different alternators it could be, I'm sure others can, it would be best to post an image of it.

I did not watch the video (I lock em out), but you should have it on everywhere except the tensioner, then put your wrench over the belt on the tensioner, pull the tensioner counter clockwise and slip the belt on.

If it don't go on, you either don't have it on everywhere correctly or it's the wrong belt.

Try the next longer belt ...

-Enjoy

I've been very careful of the routing and it certainly the wrong belt. Not sure what the right one is, but I will sort it out tomorrow. The belt I cut off is only 5/8" longer at the most. I'm thinking who ever put that one on really worked at getting it on. I will sort it out. There has to be a belt out there somewhere looking for a home on my pickup!

So I checked with Ford and the belt I cut off is listed as the correct one, 110.3 inches long. O'rielly had one that they said is 110.6 inches long. They said it's for applications with the ambulance package. Pretty sure mine isn't an ambulance.............but any way, it fit, but I would say not by much. The indicator on the tensioner is at the very edge of the left line, meaning on the tight side. But it is on and I will log the length and part # for future applications.
Thanks for all the help
