If you pull the distributor, you can prime the engine with a drill.

You'll need an Oil Pump Primer ... A drive shaft to turn the oil pump, some make them out of old distributors.

They cost from $10 up.

Since I'm not a Ford gasser man, I do not know for sure exactly what one the 460 uses.
Mind you, I have no dislike of them either, I just don't know them!

-Enjoy

Nice to know it's that easy to reach and that it would be 5/16" proper.

Thank you

spent the last hour or so searching for info , all i find is taper plug ,j plug , front ,back ... ok whatever , i have a gusher of oil going on the cam near #1 ,, now if the cam/crank were spinning , my guess is i would have a lot of oil in the top end ,, so i guess i will order push rods , lifters , and gaskets ... and cross my fingers ,, looks to me by the ware on the lifters this motor has more than 48 k , more like 148 , or 2.. being as i am in the middle of hells desert it will be a few days to get parts ,, so i will update as to what happens ,, any warnings or sugestions on what i am about to do, will be greatly appreciated ,, thanx guys

I'd say while you have it torn down, put an actual mechanical oil pressure gauge on it. So you get a real reading instead of the junk factory gauge that only tells you that there is some sort of pressure.

The top end is oiled through the pushrods, via the lifters. The lifters need to be installed in order to properly see if the top end is being oiled correctly. If everything is working, you should see oil come up and out through the top of the lifters. Normally you'd want to see oil coming out through the pushrods, but you can't do that for obvious reasons.

Can't you run a pump primer with the VCs off on a 460? One was mentioned earlier.

Yes, You can prime it with the valve covers off, you can even run it for a short period if you don't mind oil everywhere ...

That's what needs to happen next, get the push rods in and prime it again to ensure it has the pump to get oil to the top.

-Enjoy

I learned a lesson a long time ago ... It hurt bad!

I now bypass fuel systems and provide my own clean fuel supply BEFORE starting something that has been setting a long time!
