Help new to this life:)

Hey guys, so I have been doing as much research as I can and have figured out that a great truck for me would be a 7.3l psd.. the only issue is I am very new to the diesel field, and would like a truck, that as long as I keep up on matinance it should last me... I have found 1989 7.3l f-350 super cab long box dually... now I really like this truck, but the only issue is it is very far away like a couple states..... so I am not sure what I am getting myself into so I though I'd ask y'all. Here is the truck.. it has 300k on it and they are asking $2500 and saying runs good...is there anything I should know/ look for and how is the asking price?

You do realize that truck is not a PSD (Powerstroke Diesel), it's an IDI (Indirect Injection) and it came from the factory with no turbo. It is deadnuts simple and reliable but it is no powerhouse. It will get the job done, it just takes a little longer.

I realize that this is not a power stroke truck... and these trucks are pretty slow... but I don't need a fast truck and I'm not going to daily drive it... but I as wondering some other opinions on the price of the truck

$2500 isn't a bad price for that truck. Not great but not bad. What do you plan on using it for?

Biggest concern with these trucks is the amount of rust. I'd ask for pics of the underside, especially if it is from a rust belt state.

I'm waiting on underside pics, and it's from northern Mississippi... I'm for PA.. so I know I'm in the rust hole.. my primary purpose is to haul the occasional load and to haul a horse trailer.. I ant something I can fix cheaply and still do truck things... but I want stone cold reliability.

FYI the front seats in that truck are from a newer (92-96) truck. Also the interior plastics appear to have been repainted with the 92-96 color.

I was told the truck runs just fine. It has no major issues except maybe weak batteries.... still waiting on underneath photos... if presented with the option would you buy it? I know they re "slow but how slow are they really"?

I do not know where, but it's right on the border of North Mississippi... how is rust in Mississippi?

From what I know of my home, the border state, Missouri, I'd be worried about rust

Water is water, oxygen is oxygen. The rust I see, except for the Coast, is 10 years rust on a deep south vehicle is about 1-2 years worth of the rust belt. Salt is infrequently used, but it does snow regularly above US 84.

Reason I asked is depending on where it actually is, an FTE'er might be available to look at it. I'm thinking its in Southaven an actual suburb of Memphis.

Just my opinion is that 300k means even if the engine is great everything else is about to fall apart, rust not withstanding.

Good luck though.

Yeah you can fix pretty much everything on an old truck. But if you're looking for "stone cold reliability" that truck is about 20 - 25 years too old. Anything old WILL have issues. If you keep on top of them you (probably) won't get stranded. But that takes time, money and a commitment to stay on top of it. Not to say an old truck is a bad idea, just sayin' you need to think of old trucks as an on-going project.

And by the way, the full size back seat and 4 doors is a crew cab. The SuperCab has a smallish back seat (not made for adults) and no doors ('99 and on have small "suicide" rear doors).

The fact that it's a manual helps a lot IMO. The auto-IDIs are even slower. It's gonna be like driving a tractor - run thru the gears quickly, shifting at no more than 2000 RPM. It'll get there when it gets there. "Slow" is a relative term.

If rust is not an issue, I'd be trying to get it for no more than $2000. There's not much of a market for the IDI trucks anymore, plus, at 300K+ miles, the motor is about 3/4 used up, at best.

I'll say this, I paid half that for my 94 and it is in far far better shape.

Don't be in a hurry!
It's got a broken hip, rust appearing to show between the right doors and drivers door bottom, white paint touch up on drivers rocker possibly trying to hide rust, the DIY'ed interior is falling apart, no tailgate likely!

Personally, I would pass that one!

-Enjoy

i see absolutely nothing in those pics that would encourage me to drive any distance to see the truck ... just the opposite, in fact. it's not terrible, for it's age, but with that much rust showing on the rims, i would guess that the rear leaf spring hangers were in terrible shape, along with the rad. support.
