A/c clutch issue
My a/c clutch hub is dragging on one side and I'm looking at my options of repair. Truck is a 01 f250 v10 236k miles. Could I replace just the clutch hub and be fine or do I need to replace the entire clutch? Could I leave the coil and just replace the rest of I couldn't get the coil off? The pulley and clutch hub have raise grooves going in circles. Is it possible to replace the clutch while it's mounted still in truck? Thanks for help.

It's possible but it's a pain in the *** the fan shroud doesn't make it easy. There isn't a lot of room to work down there the clutch is easy but the pulley is an s.o.b. to get off and even more so to get the new one on. It doesn't exactly just slide over the magnet. It takes some persuading.

You should be able to pull it apart and see what's hurt without too much grief. Take out the center bolt and pull the plate off, then remove the snap ring and pull the rest off. There is a replaceable bearing in there that has probably failed and is available separately if that is all that's wrong.

The problem with just replacing the clutch plate is that the pulley is going to be worn and with well over 200,000 on it (assuming it is original) it is likely badly grooved which is normal. The correct repair is to replace the pulley and plate ensuring the gap is correct. The pulley comes with a new bearing which will eliminate that issue. But, I might remove the plate first and inspect it to see what condition it's in first.

Mike 189677 Thankyou very much h for code. I purchased ac clutch along with other items and finished the repair today. Old one came off well and new one on about same. I left the coil since it looked good. I left the fan shroud in place. Had a pain putting shims in to correct gap. All is good now. Replaced carrier bearing few days ago and now planning to do u joints.
