Old Rochester 2-jet carb rebuild: accelerator pump check ball?
Gentlemen,
As the title suggests, I'm rebuilding an old Rochester 2G carb, and mine is one of those that has a check ball at the bottom of the accelerator pump well.
What's not clear to me is how it can possibly perform its intended function designed the way it is.
The check ball goes into the bottom of the well, into a small seat on the channel that feeds gas into the well from the bowl. The theory is that the ball lifts up, off the seat, to let gas flow into the well. Then when the accel pump acctuates, it sits back down onto the seat to prevent gas from flowing backwards into the bowl, forcing it out another channel into the throat.
BUT - as found on disassembly, and this agrees with the rebuild kit's re-assembly diagram, after the check ball goes in, then there's a retainer clip that slips down into the well on top of it, and then there's a large spring that goes on top of that. The accel pump pushes down on that spring.
Both the retainer clip and the spring press down on the check ball. So how is the check ball supposed to ever lift up to allow fuel into the accel pump well?
I know that's how I found it, and how the instructions say to rebuild it, but it just makes no sense.
Thanks.
