Question steering hang spots

Have 1985 ford e150 van, with 351 motor with automatic and power steering.Driving it and turning right or left and has a hang spot, you can feel it when coming back to center point and some times just moving the steering wheel a little bit while driving. So I greased everything and still has a slight hang spot.So when the van is neutral and not running rock the steering wheel and have a inch of play. You can feel a little drag.Is it the top bearing in the gearbox going bad, none of the ties rods are moving at that point.Guess the point is it power steering pump or gear box.Hate too see it lock up when driving. All the people I could ask are dead and the rest are bowtie boys. Thanks for your support.Greyhound

Hi greyhound,
here is the discussion on setting/checking steering boxes. Your issue is serious if it is something in the box that is broken. jim

Have you checked the flex coupling that connects the steering shaft to the gearbox? You also have bearings in the steering column itself.

If you have a tilt steering wheel, you also have a u-joint in there.. I don't know if they ever go bad. I would think having the steering column straight and turning the steering wheel would check that out though..

Just making suggestions before you have to go in to the gear box...
