I pulled the E4OD wiring harness off my 1997 E-350 6.8L van today. I have replaced the V-10 and rebuilt the E4OD. When I started it the trans OD light was blinking. I took it back to my tranny guy and he said it was in the wiring. I was encouraged to find that it was pinched behind a tranny hard line (the line that runs between the two banjo bolts on the passenger side of the trans connecting the two cooler lines). I disassembled the harness.




My research says the A solenoid is the y/w wire. I check every inch and could not see or feel damage. It was pinched 4-6" above the control module connector.




The clip that secures the control module connector is broken, happened during tranny removal.




I have seen connector repair kits, does anyone know where I can get a good one? I will try and find an E4OD thread to repost this also.

 

Looking and feeling the wire doesn't mean much. Does the wire have continuity from one end to the other? Does it have a short to ground? Short to power? You MUST check it electrically or you don't know if it is good or not.

 

Hi Mark, I didn't check the harness while it was in place on the trans. I can feel on the wires where they were under pressure but looking with a jeweler's loupe I cannot see damage down to the copper. I agree with you, now that I have unwrapped the harness I may plug it in and see if the trouble still exists but I don't know how the clear the error codes manually. I'm going to replace the section of the harness to fix the broken latch.

 

Plug it into what? You need to get a meter and do the electrical checks I mentioned above.

Have you cut away all the insulation on each wire over it's entire length? If not, your inspection is inconclusive at best.

 

You are right, I'll to that tomorrow morning. I was going to plug the cable back into the wiring harness and disconnect the ECU end, then test for a short end to end. The heat here is to intense to work outside after 9AM and I can't use the shop until Monday. Do you know how to reset the codes manually?

 

Disconnect the PCM or the negative battery cable.

 

I borrowed an Innova 3130 OBDII scanner from a friend of mine. Now that I have pulled the wiring harness from the trans and checked it I'm getting a P1746 (open circuit) code, not the original P1747. Now either I got the wrong diagnosis from my trans guy or I'm really close to the problem and it went from short to open.

I have ordered the repair kit with the new connector to the trans control module (my latch was broken and needed to be replaced). I'm going to remove the harness again, replace the ECM connector then test the wires end to end. If that doesn't fix the problem I can at least eliminate that section of the wiring harness!

 

I talked with a friend who is a long time auto service manager in St Louis. He said I need more in-depth diagnostic documentation and tools to pinpoint this problem. He actually suggested I go to a Ford stealership!

Considering I have more time than money I think I'll continue on my current path until I run out of options.

 

I got the replacement connector from Rock Auto yesterday, it's from FoMoCo! I repaired the E4OD harness, this is the old connector.




To hot to work outside yesterday so I went out early this morning and cleaned the TCM socket with contact cleaner and blew it out. I looked at the connector with a scope and looked good. Plugged all tranny connectors in and ran a koeo and koer scan, code are gone! Thanks so much for all your encouragement and advise.
