1989 F250 Runs Great, Cuts off, Won't Crank/Start, After time Starts like nothing happened
My 1989 F250 runs for a while then cuts off, won't crank. Makes a loud humming noise when I turn it over. After a while it will crank and start. Not sure what's making it cut off or what's keeping it from starting back up.
Help.

Loose or Bad starter or bad ring gear ...
Pull the flywheel dust cover and inspect the ring gear teeth. Especially where the starter engages when doing this ... Ring gears wear in spots, not all the way around!
Pull the starter, inspect the bendix gear, lube the bendix shaft and try that or replace starter!
-Enjoy

I'm guessing it's the PIP in your distributor. You have to disassemble the distributor to replace the PIP, so it's easier to just get a NEW aftermarket distributor. Stay away from rebuilt distributors as most of them are junk.
A bad coil could also cause your problem, but less likely. That being said and the ease of changing the coil, I would be tempted to try a coil first.

Yeah, sounds like two issues....the starter...and an electrical component dying out as it gets up to temperature. Like has been said, coils, distributors, and their components tend to heat up and then not work. I had a similar dying issue that turned out to be the distributor. Drove me nuts how sometimes it would start like a dream and then suddenly not want to start other times. It will help to search and diagnose while cold and then again after letting everything get up to normal operating temperatures...just make sure you're back in the driveway where all your tools and cold beer are.
