Question of the Week: What Feeds the F Series Success?

For our newest Question of the Week, we want to know what you think has helped the Ford F Series to lead American sales for the last 34 years.

The F Series has led all vehicle sales in the US for the past 34 years and all truck sales for the past 39 years, but why? What do you think has allowed the F Series to be such a dominant force for such a long time?

I'd say simple rugged reliability. Look at all the work yards around the country. Most are filled with fords. They can't afford to have their equipment not working or having to constantly dump money into them

I just turned 320,000 miles on my 2001 Friday. They are great trucks and built to last. That's why I am a customer and will continue to be one. What I think is even more intriguing is that they have led sales for the past 34 years even though a large percentage of their customers are "out of the market" because they are currently enjoying a great Ford truck that is continuing to give them years of service. Planned obsolescence which is so common with other durable goods doesn't seem to be in the Ford vernacular. That's what impresses me about their sales success.

If you want a reliable work truck you buy a Ford

If you want a truck that rides like a car you buy a Chevy/GMC

If you don't care and only look at price you buy a Dodge ..

We won't even go into the foreign vehicles...LOL

A huge part of Ford's F-Series sales is comprised of fleet and municipal sales which they are very aggressive in pursuing. It's a good bet that if you look at retail sales...things might be different.

Exactly! Fleet sales have propelled F series truck sales for decades. However, 1991 was the first year that more F150's were sold to the general public vs. fleets.

Don't like the freezing winter temps in MA? After WWII ended, my dad (Medford) moved to CA .. my uncle (Worchester) moved to AZ

My aunt is the lone holdout. After living in San Francisco during the 1960's, she moved back to MA and now lives in Sandwich.
