Take this as only anecdotal evidence.
I have been driving my rig to work because my Focus is down for a spell. 2 straight weeks of driving 70 miles round trip per day on 50-60 mph two lane highways has netted 13 mph. I drive like a geezer off the line too. This is pretty ideal MPG driving so I'm sure that s as good as my truck will ever get. 3.73 gears and factory size tires as well.
That truck seems to be OK by me as well. If it was taken care of then that is half the mileage of the life of the engine. Some folks have gotten over 500k.

I get around 12.5 mpg. One thing you want to check is the exhaust manifold studs especially if you live somewhere in the rust belt and you think it was used to plow with. Also look at the bottom of the doors and cab corners and bed supports. If you do live in that area it's going to be rusty if it was driven in the winter that's just the saying is. If it has fender flares on it that is very common way to cover up rusty bed sides. And if you don't live in the rust belt don't buy a truck from there.
Hey superkaz check your vent hose on the rear diff looks like it may be clogged since you have some oil seapge around it.
