Question '91 F250 stubles at idle when cold

Hey fellas,
First time poster here on the forums. I have a question regarding a '91 F250 with the 5.8 351 and a 5 speed tranny. It isn't my truck ,but we're looking into buying it and I need to know whether or not It can be fixed without costing us an arm and a leg.

When the truck is started cold, it has an erratic idle and sometime stalls and dies. I believe that it is some sort of sensor that is causing it to do this, but I would like some input from someone that knows more about these trucks than I do. The SES light is on. Can someone tell me how to run the diagnostics check on it without having to buy a scantool? Is it possible to run the OBD diagnostics system on these trucks without a scantool? I know I can on my 91 Chebby by sticking a paper clip or a wire from one connector hole to another connector hole. Truck has 110,000 miles. Thanks!

Was your Service Engine check light coming on??

I sure hope that it isnt the fuel pumps going out. That would probably end up being more money and work than I'm willing to put into this old thing.

Can anyone else give me some more advice on what to look for??

Thanks!

engine light never went on. would start up fine on front tank, but had to crank it on back tank. not sure on a f250, but theres a recall for the pumps. they can cause a lot of screwy problems, hard starting, stumbling, hard re-start. i checked pressure when it was below 80 degrees out and it would be good, then as soon as it hit 90 and above the pressure would drop off on the one tank and 500 miles later started losing presure on the rear. if you dont work on this trucks yourself and will be paying to have it done the best thing to do is have it checked out in a shop, you dont know what kinda mess you might be getting yourself into. might be something simple or something that might nickle and dime you to death.

I pulled the codes on this truck and this is what I come up with.

I come up with a code 22, a code 87 and a code 998. Can someone help me with these codes. To my understanding the code 998 is a "hard fault detected", and the code 87 is a fuel pump failure, and the code 22 has something to do with the MAP. Can someone please help me with this?? Thanks!!

I sure hope that I dont have a fuel pump problem like you had on your truck 55-******.
